Adjective Agreement
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Romanian, adjectives must match the gender and number of the noun they describe.
- Masculine singular: 'un băiat bun' (a good boy).
- Feminine singular: 'o fată bună' (a good girl).
- Plural: 'băieți buni' (good boys) or 'fete bune' (good girls).
Overview
How This Grammar Works
băiat (boy), use the masculine form. If you describe a fată (girl), use the feminine form. Neuter nouns are the tricksters of the group. They act like masculine nouns when they are alone (singular). They act like feminine nouns when they are in a group (plural). Think of neuter nouns as the "chameleons" of Romanian grammar. Most adjectives have four different forms to cover every combination. Some simpler ones only have three or two forms. A tiny group of adjectives, like roz (pink), never change at all. They are the rebels who refuse to dance. Most of the time, you just change the ending of the word.Formation Pattern
bun (good).
-ă. Example: bună.
-i. Example: buni.
-e. Example: bune.
mare (big), things are even easier:
mare.
mari.
When To Use It
- Ordering Food: If you want a
cafea(coffee - feminine), you ask for one that isneagră(black). - Asking Directions: Looking for a
stradă(street - feminine)? You might ask if it islungă(long). - Job Interviews: You want to describe yourself as
punctual(masculine) orpunctuală(feminine). - Shopping: Buying a
tricou(T-shirt - neuter)? You'll need anou(new) one. - Socializing: Meeting
prieteni(friends - masculine plural)? They aresimpatici(nice).
When Not To Use It
gri (gray), roz (pink), bordo (burgundy), or bej (beige) stay the same. You can have a mașină gri or pantofii gri. They don't care about gender or number. Also, if you are using an adverb to describe an action, it doesn't agree. For example, in "She sings beautifully," the word "beautifully" doesn't change. But in "She is beautiful," the adjective must agree with her. It is like a grammar traffic light; usually, you must stop and change the ending, but for these few words, you have a permanent green light.Common Mistakes
un scaun nou (one new chair), it looks masculine. But if you have două scaune, they must be noue? No, the feminine plural ending is -e, so it becomes două scaune bune. Another common slip is the "i" sound at the end of masculine plurals. It is often very short, almost like a whisper. Don't over-pronounce it like a long "ee." Also, watch out for feminine singulars ending in -ă. It sounds like the "a" in "about." Many people accidentally use the masculine form for everything because it's shorter. Don't be that person! Taking a second to add that -ă makes you sound much more polished.Contrast With Similar Patterns
mic has to transform into mică, mici, or mici depending on the target. It's more work, but it also provides more clues. If you hear frumoasă, you know immediately the speaker is talking about something feminine, even if you missed the noun!Quick FAQ
Do colors always agree?
Most do, like albastru (blue) becoming albastră. But some like gri never change.
What if I describe a group of men and women?
Use the masculine plural. The masculine gender "wins" in mixed groups. It’s a bit old-fashioned, but that’s the rule!
Where does the adjective go?
Usually after the noun. O casă mare (A house big). Putting it before the noun is for poetic or very formal styles.
Is it okay if I forget an ending?
Yes! People will still understand you. It’s like wearing mismatched socks—a bit odd, but you can still walk fine.
