Conditional Clauses (Ако)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'ако' to link a condition to a result, always remembering to separate the clauses with a comma.
- Real conditions use the present or future tense: 'Ако вали, ще остана.'
- Unreal present conditions use the past tense + 'бих': 'Ако бях богат, бих пътувал.'
- Always place a comma before 'ако' if it starts the second clause.
Meanings
Conditional clauses express an action that can only happen if a specific condition is met. They consist of a subordinate clause (the condition) and a main clause (the result).
Real Condition (Present/Future)
Used for situations that are likely or possible in the present or future.
“Ако приключим рано, ще отидем на кино.”

Unreal Condition (Present/Future)
Used for hypothetical or imaginary situations that are unlikely to happen now.
“Ако бях на твое място, не бих го направил.”

Used to express regret or hypothetical situations in the past that did not happen.
“Ако бях учил повече, щях да взема изпита.”
