The Double 'Бы' Rule

In conditional 'If... then' sentences, you must put бы in BOTH clauses. If you only put it in one, the sentence sounds incomplete to a Russian ear.

Review Summary

  • Past Tense Verb + бы

Erros comuns

You cannot use the future tense with 'бы'. Even if you are talking about the future, the Russian subjunctive requires the past tense form.

Wrong: Если я буду иметь время, я бы пошёл.
Correto: Если бы у меня было время, я бы пошёл.

In a conditional 'if-then' sentence, the particle 'бы' must appear in BOTH the condition (if) and the consequence (then).

Wrong: Если бы я знал, я пошёл.
Correto: Если бы я знал, я бы пошёл.

Even for polite present-tense wishes like 'I would like', you must use the past tense 'хотел' + 'бы'.

Wrong: Я бы хочу чай.
Correto: Я бы хотел чаю.

Perguntas comuns (2)

Take the past tense of the verb and add the particle бы. For example, я пошёл (I went) becomes я пошёл бы (I would go).
Yes! Even though it uses the past tense form, it can refer to any time. Завтра я бы пошёл means 'Tomorrow I would go'.
