Uh this is a digital level. Classic use
for it is in the workshop for setting
things like blades to the right angle.
Let's uh take this one apart and see how
it's constructed. So single circuit
board in this particular product. Uh
kind of two expected components. This is
a microcontroller a PUA PY32.
Uh it also is known as an 8 cent
microcontroller. Has a Cortex M0 down
here. LCD driver by the Shenzen Titan
Micro. Um, two companies you may not
have heard of, but China has got a very
rich ecosystem now of chip providers.
Almost certainly though, the bit that
actually makes the measurement is
sitting under this black epoxy blob.
Let's uh take this uh particular part
off the board and uh analyze and see
what it is. And then we'll analyze the
microcontroller uh the LCD driver and uh
obviously a power supply up here. So
let's uh though first see what's sitting
here because I suspect that's actually
the exciting bit. Okay. Uh so over here
we have a black blob and I took a bit of
hot air and I've uh pried off the top
and uh peeking in the center there looks
like some sort of sensor. Now, the black
blob you might think is a chip on board,
but in this case, it's actually being
used probably as a mechanical damping
material.
And if I take that part off the board
and I look at it on a microscope, I get
this pretty indistinct. Um the uh looks
like some sort of window here and
there's something hiding behind it. Um,
and uh, if I do some magic here, this is
uh, my microscope and I basically I'm
going to pull the focus from the top and
I'm going to come down. It's absolutely
magical. Just uh, watch what happens
here as I change the focus plane.
Okay, cool. So, there's some sort of
glass window and hiding behind that
glass window is a semiconductor.
Let's sort down what that semiconductor
