Don't use them if the logic is already obvious. If you say "I'm hungry, so I'll eat," that's fine. But saying "I'm hungry, consequently I shall partake in a meal" is just weird.
Keep it natural. If the connection is simple, use a simple word. Save the heavy hitters for when you really need to persuade someone.
