Review Summary

  • Imperfect (Background) + Aorist (Action)
  • Past Context -> Present Verb

أخطاء شائعة

The Imperfect describes an ongoing state. For a completed action like reading a whole book, the Aorist (and perfective aspect) is required.

Wrong: Вчера четях (Imperfect) книгата докрай.
صحيح: Вчера прочетох (Aorist) книгата докрай.

In a sequence of actions, all verbs should generally be in the Aorist. Using the Imperfect 'сядаше' suggests he was in the middle of sitting down repeatedly or for a long time.

Wrong: Той влезе и сядаше на стола.
صحيح: Той влезе и седна на стола.

In narratives, 'онзи' is used for remote temporal distance (that day), whereas 'този' (this day) implies the current day or one very close to the speaker.

Wrong: Този ден преди десет години беше хубав.
صحيح: Онзи ден преди десет години беше хубав.

أسئلة شائعة (6)

Generally no. Descriptions of states or weather use the Imperfect. Aorist is for changes in state.
It's a historical development in the language. Both end in -ше, so you rely on context or pronouns.
Bulgarian values 'evidentiality'—knowing whether the speaker saw the event or just heard about it. This adds precision to storytelling.
No. If you use the Perfect for a witnessed specific time (e.g., 'Yesterday I have eaten'), it sounds like you have amnesia or are unsure of your own life.
Technically yes, but only in subordinate clauses (like after 'да') or for future meaning. You cannot say 'Аз напиша' to mean 'I am writing right now'.
There is no single rule, but на- is the most common. You must learn the aspectual pairs as individual vocabulary items.
