Ellipsis and Substitution: Avoiding Repetition
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Master the art of omitting redundant words to sound like a native Armenian speaker.
- Omit repeated subjects when the verb ending makes the person clear: 'Ես գնում եմ, իսկ դու՝ ոչ' (I'm going, but you [are] not).
- Use 'նույնը' (the same) or 'այդպես' (so/thus) to substitute entire verb phrases.
- Drop redundant objects if the context is established in the previous clause.

Meanings
Ellipsis and substitution are cohesive devices used to avoid lexical repetition by omitting or replacing elements that are recoverable from the context.
Subject Ellipsis
Dropping the pronoun when the verb conjugation is sufficient.
“Գնում եմ տուն։”
“Արդեն կարդացել եմ։”
Verb Phrase Substitution
Replacing a repeated action with 'այդպես' or 'նույնը'.
“Նա աշխատում է, ես էլ եմ այդպես անում։”
“Նա գիրքը կարդաց, ես էլ նույնը արեցի։”

Aram walked into the room. He sat down. He opened his book. In Armenian, we say: 'Արամը մտավ սենյակ։ Նստեց։ Բացեց գիրքը։' The subject 'He' is implied by the verb endings.
