Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Armenian uses a precise three-way system (Speaker, Listener, Remote) to track objects and ideas throughout a conversation or text.
- Use 'ս-' (s) for things near the speaker: սա, այս, -ս (this/here).
- Use 'դ-' (d) for things near the listener: դա, այդ, -դ (that/there).
- Use 'ն-' (n) for things remote from both: նա, այն, -ն (that over there).

Meanings
Referential devices in Armenian are linguistic tools (pronouns, demonstratives, and suffixes) used to identify and track entities within a discourse context based on their proximity to the participants.
Spatial Deixis
Locating objects in physical space relative to the speaker and listener.

Anaphoric Reference
Referring back to something already mentioned in the text to maintain cohesion.
“Նա ասաց մի բան, բայց այդ միտքը ինձ դուր չեկավ:”

Using demonstratives to show emotional closeness or detachment from a topic.

Using 'ինքը' (ink'ə) to refer back to the subject of a main clause in complex sentences.

Both mean 'he/she', but 'նա' is a general third person, while 'ինքը' is logophoric or emphatic.
Learners use 'այս' as a standalone pronoun.

When offering food, a host will use 'այս' to refer to the food they are holding, but the guest should use 'այդ' to refer to the food being offered to them.
Western Armenian uses 'աս, ադ, ան' instead of 'այս, այդ, այն'. Understanding this is key for C2 learners engaging with the diaspora.
