Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Lao uses serial verbs to express complex actions by placing multiple verbs in a row without conjunctions.
- Place verbs in chronological order: 'Go buy food' -> 'ໄປຊື້ເຄື່ອງ' (pai sue khueang).
- No 'and' needed between verbs: 'Eat and sleep' -> 'ກິນນອນ' (kin non).
- The second verb often describes the purpose or result of the first.
Meanings
A serial verb construction involves two or more verbs appearing in a single clause without any overt markers like 'and' or 'to'. It expresses a single complex event or a sequence of actions.
Sequential Action
Actions happening one after another.
“ລາວລຸກໄປເຮັດວຽກ (He gets up and goes to work).”
“ຂ້ອຍຍ່າງໄປໂຮງຮຽນ (I walk to school).”
Purpose/Intent
The first verb indicates movement toward a goal.
“ຂ້ອຍມາຫາເຈົ້າ (I come to find you).”
“ລາວໄປຊອກວຽກ (He goes to look for work).”
Resultative
The second verb shows the result of the first.
“ລາວຕີໝາຕາຍ (He hit the dog dead).”
“ຂ້ອຍກິນອີ່ມ (I eat full).”
