Ь (Soft Sign) makes the previous consonant 'soft' or palatalized, while Ъ (Hard Sign) acts as a separator between syllables.

  • Ь softens the preceding consonant: 'бань' (bath) sounds like 'bany'.
  • Ъ prevents blending: it forces a pause between a consonant and a vowel, like 'орц' vs 'оръя'.
  • Neither sign has a sound of its own; they only change how the letters around them behave.
