Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Russian, the number you use dictates the grammatical case and number of the noun that follows it.

  • 1: Use Nominative Singular for '1' (один стол).
  • 2: Use Genitive Singular for '2, 3, 4' (два стола).

Look at the Last Digit

Always look at the very last digit of a number to decide the case. 104? Ends in 4. Use Genitive Singular. 100? Ends in 0. Use Genitive Plural.

Remember that 11, 12, 13, and 14 do NOT follow the 1, 2, 3, 4 rule. They behave like the number 5 and take the Genitive Plural.
