§ Don't confuse it with 'deep' in a physical sense.

One of the most common pitfalls when learning 깊이있다 (gipiitda) is to directly translate 'deep' from English. In English, 'deep' can refer to physical depth (a deep hole, deep water) or metaphorical depth (a deep thought, a deep conversation). However, 깊이있다 *only* applies to metaphorical depth – things that are profound, in-depth, or have intellectual/emotional richness. You wouldn't use 깊이있다 to describe a physically deep object.

§ Using it as a verb instead of an adjective.

While 깊이있다 ends with '-있다' (itda), which often forms verbs in Korean, it functions as a descriptive adjective. This means it modifies nouns or describes the state of something. You wouldn't say 'to profundify' something with 깊이있다. Instead, you'd say 'something *is* profound' or 'a profound *thing*'. This can be tricky because the '-있다' ending often implies existence or possession, but here it's part of an adjective.

WRONG: 그는 그 주제를 깊이있었다. (Geuneun geu jujereul gipiisseotda.) - This attempts to use it as a verb, which is incorrect.
RIGHT: 그 주제는 깊이있다. (Geu jujeneun gipiitda.) - The topic *is* profound.

§ Overusing it in situations where 'complex' or 'difficult' is more appropriate.

Sometimes learners might use 깊이있다 when they actually mean 'complex' (복잡하다 - bokjapada) or 'difficult' (어렵다 - eoryeopda). While a profound subject can be complex or difficult, the core meaning of 깊이있다 emphasizes richness, insight, and thoroughness, not just intricate parts or challenging aspects. If something is just hard to understand due to its many components, 'complex' is a better fit. If it requires a lot of effort to grasp, 'difficult' is better.

When you want to describe *how* something is done with depth (e.g., 'to study deeply'), you need to use the adverbial form. 깊이있다 is an adjective, so you would change the ending to create an adverb. The adverbial form is 깊이 (gipi), meaning 'deeply'.

WRONG: 그는 그 주제를 깊이있게 공부했다. (Geuneun geu jujereul gipiitge gongbuhaetda.) - While this might sound acceptable to some, it's not the most natural or standard adverbial usage.
RIGHT: 그는 그 주제를 깊이 공부했다. (Geuneun geu jujereul gipi gongbuhaetda.) - He studied the topic deeply.

The form 깊이있게 (gipiitge) can sometimes be seen, but 깊이 is the more common and natural adverb when modifying verbs.

Use 깊이있다 (or its conjugated forms like 깊이있는) to describe nouns (a profound book, a profound person).
Use 깊이 to describe verbs (to study deeply, to think deeply).

§ Forgetting the particle structure.

When 깊이있다 modifies a noun, it needs to be in its attributive form, which is 깊이있는 (gipiinneun). Forgetting to add '-는' (neun) when directly preceding a noun is a common grammatical error for adjectives.
