Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To negate the past tense in Lao, simply place 'bo dai' (ບໍ່ໄດ້) before the main verb.

  • Use 'bo dai' before the verb to express that an action did not happen: 'bo dai kin' (didn't eat).
  • The word 'bo' acts as the general negative, while 'dai' adds the past/completed aspect.
  • The word order remains Subject + bo dai + Verb + Object.
Subject + ບໍ່ໄດ້ (bo dai) + Verb + Object

Meanings

Politeness

Add 'chao' at the end to be more polite.

Smart Tips

Always use 'bo dai' for past events.

ຂ້ອຍບໍ່ໄປມື້ວານນີ້ ຂ້ອຍບໍ່ໄດ້ໄປມື້ວານນີ້

Remember: Lao verbs never change!
