In many Pakistani homes, windows are kept closed during the peak afternoon hours of summer to keep the house cool. This is a practical survival tactic against the 40°C+ heat. During the Diwali festival, windows are often kept open to welcome prosperity, but 'khirki band کرنا' becomes important later to keep out the smoke from firecrackers. In crowded cities like Karachi or Delhi, closing the window is the primary way to manage 'Shor' (noise pollution) from traffic and street vendors. Traditional 'Jharokas' were often closed with wooden shutters. The act of closing them was a signal that the household was retiring for the night.
