输液
When you are sick, sometimes you need medicine to go directly into your body. This is called an intravenous infusion, or an IV drip.
In Chinese, we say 输液 (shū yè) for this.
It means a doctor or nurse will put a small needle into your vein, usually in your arm.
Then, a bag of liquid medicine slowly goes into your body to help you feel better.
When you're feeling under the weather in China, especially with a bad cold or flu, don't be surprised if the doctor recommends 输液 (shūyè), or getting an IV drip.
It's a common practice here, much more so than in some Western countries, where IVs are usually reserved for more serious conditions.
Doctors often prescribe 输液 to quickly deliver medication, fluids, and nutrients directly into your bloodstream, aiming to help you recover faster.
So, if a doctor suggests 输液, they're not necessarily saying you're critically ill, but rather that they want to give your recovery a boost.

Nouns that can be used with 输液: Commonly, 输液 is used with nouns like 药物 (yàowù - medicine) or 营养液 (yíngyǎngyè - nutrient solution) to specify what is being infused. However, when the context is clear that it's about medical treatment, 输液 can be used independently.
医生给我输液了抗生素。 (Yīshēng gěi wǒ shūyè le kàngshēngsù.) - The doctor gave me an IV drip of antibiotics.
Verbs that can be used with 输液: While 输液 itself is a verb, it can be combined with other verbs to describe the action of getting an IV. For instance, '打输液' (dǎ shūyè) or '挂输液' (guà shūyè) are common informal ways to say 'to get an IV drip,' emphasizing the action of setting up or receiving the drip.
我需要去医院打输液。 (Wǒ xūyào qù yīyuàn dǎ shūyè.) - I need to go to the hospital to get an IV drip.
Adjectives that can be used with 输液: Adjectives can describe the type or purpose of the IV. For example, '紧急输液' (jǐnjí shūyè - emergency IV) or '营养输液' (yíngyǎng shūyè - nutritional IV).

When referring to the medical procedure of receiving fluids or medication directly into a vein, 输液 (shū yè) is the correct and most common term in Chinese. It's a verb, but can also be used nominally to refer to the IV drip itself. For example:
- 医生建议我输液。 (Yīshēng jiànyì wǒ shūyè.) - The doctor suggested I get an IV drip.
- 他昨天去医院输液了。 (Tā zuótiān qù yīyuàn shūyè le.) - He went to the hospital for an IV drip yesterday.
- 护士正在给他输液。 (Hùshì zhèngzài gěi tā shūyè.) - The nurse is giving him an intravenous infusion.
A common mistake for English speakers might be to directly translate 'IV drip' using separate words like '静脉' (jìngmài - vein) and '滴' (dī - drip), which would not be natural or correct in this context. While you might hear 打点滴 (dǎ diǎndī - literally 'to give a drip') in very informal settings, 输液 is the standard and more formal term for the medical procedure. Incorrect example:
- 他正在打静脉滴。 (Tā zhèngzài dǎ jìngmài dī.) - This is an incorrect and unnatural way to say 'he is getting an IV drip'.
