Overview

### Overview
### How This Grammar Works
Nosotros decimos Aunque estaba cansado...
1. Las Conjunciones: Although y Even Though
  • Estructura: Although / Even though + Sujeto + Verbo
  • En español: Equivale a nuestro aunque.
Ejemplo: Although it (S) was (V) expensive, I bought it.
Aquí, it was expensive es una oración completa.
2. Las Preposiciones: Despite e In Spite Of
Aquí es donde muchos estudiantes se confunden. Despite e in spite of son preposiciones.
  • Estructura: Despite / In spite of + Sustantivo / Pronombre / Gerundio (-ing)
Ejemplo con sustantivo: Despite the rain, we went out.
Ejemplo con gerundio: Despite feeling sick, she finished the report.
¡Ojo! En español decimos
a pesar de que estaba cansado
3. El puente: Despite the fact that
  • Despite the fact that it was raining, we played football.
| Conector | Estructura | Ejemplo |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Although | Although + Sujeto + Verbo, + Principal | Although the coffee was cold, he drank it. |
| Even though | Even though + Sujeto + Verbo, + Principal | Even though I studied hard, I failed. |
| Despite | Despite + Sustantivo/Gerundio, + Principal | Despite the cold coffee, he drank it. |
| In spite of | In spite of + Sustantivo/Gerundio, + Principal | In spite of studying hard, I failed. |
| Conector | Estructura | Ejemplo |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Although | Principal + although + Sujeto + Verbo | He drank the coffee although it was cold. |
| Even though | Principal + even though + Sujeto + Verbo | I failed the exam even though I studied hard. |
| Despite | Principal + despite + Sustantivo/Gerundio | He drank the coffee despite the temperature. |
| In spite of | Principal + in spite of + Sustantivo/Gerundio | I failed in spite of all my effort. |
### When To Use It
. -> I know the budget is low. Despite the budget, we can finish the project.
. -> Although some say technology isolates us, I believe it connects us.
3. Para manejar la formalidad y el énfasis
  • Although: Es el estándar. Úsalo en correos, conversaciones y presentaciones. Es seguro y siempre suena bien.
  • Even though: Es más emocional.
: Even though I told you a thousand times, you forgot!
En lugar de decir Although the weather was terrible (5 palabras), puedes decir Despite the terrible weather (4 palabras).
1. El error del Despite of
Este es el error número uno. En español decimos
a pesar de
. En inglés, tenemos dos opciones: in spite of (que sí lleva of) y despite (que NO lleva of).
  • Incorrecto: Despite of the rain... (Esto es una mezcla incorrecta).
  • Correcto: Despite the rain... o In spite of the rain...
Aunque estaba cansado, no hace falta decir yo). En inglés, el sujeto es obligatorio.
  • Incorrecto: Although was tired, I went to the party.
  • Correcto: Although I was tired, I went to the party.
I, you, the car, the weather).
  • Incorrecto: Despite I studied, I failed.
  • Correcto: Despite studying, I failed. o Although I studied, I failed.
  • Explicación: Despite es una preposición. Piensa en ella como la palabra con. Tú no dices con yo estudié, dices con mi estudio. Lo mismo pasa con despite.
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
A veces nos confundimos entre although, but y however.
| It was raining, but we went out. |
| Although it was raining, we went out. |
| It was raining. However, we went out. |
| Despite the rain, we went out. |
### Quick FAQ
1. ¿Puedo usar Despite y In spite of indistintamente?
Solo recuerda: despite nunca lleva of.
Si dices: Although it's late, I'll call him, suena normal. Si dices: Even though it's 3 AM, I'll call him, estás enfatizando lo increíble o exagerado de la situación.
I bought it, though.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

No, 'despite' is a preposition and needs an object. However, you can use 'though' at the end of a sentence in informal English.

Slightly. 'Despite' is very common in writing and formal speech, while 'although' and 'even though' are more common in everyday conversation.

There is no difference in meaning or grammar. 'Despite' is one word, and 'in spite of' is three words. They are interchangeable.

Yes! This is very common. For example: 'Despite being ill, he went to work.'

Because 'despite' is already a preposition. Adding 'of' is redundant and grammatically incorrect in English.

Yes, you can. Just remember to put a comma after the first clause. 'Although it was late, I called him.'

Yes, but it is stronger. Use 'even though' when you want to emphasize that the contrast is very surprising.

It is a longer way of saying 'although'. It allows you to use 'despite' followed by a full sentence (a clause).
