Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use First Conditional questions to ask about the likely results of a possible future action or event.
- Use 'Present Simple' in the 'if' clause, never 'will'. Example: 'If it rains...'
- Use 'will' + base verb in the question clause. Example: '...will you stay?'
- If the 'if' clause comes first, use a comma. Example: 'If you go, will you call?'
Overview
If it rains, will the match be cancelled?
The If Clause): Es el evento que debe ocurrir primero.
Si estudias(Presente) =If you study(Present Simple).¿Aprobarás...?(Futuro) =Will you pass...?(Future withwill).
Si llueve, ¿vamos al cine?.
will: If it rains, will we go to the cinema?. El uso del presente en la pregunta (Do we go...?) suena más a una rutina o a una verdad general (Zero Conditional), no a un plan específico para el futuro.will para marcar ese tiempo.will se mueva de posición.Will (Main Clause first):Will + Sujeto + Verbo Base + if + Sujeto + Present Simple? Will you help me if I ask you?(¿Me ayudarás si te lo pido?)Will the flight be delayed if there is a storm?(¿Se retrasará el vuelo si hay una tormenta?)
If (If Clause first):If + Sujeto + Present Simple, will + Sujeto + Verbo Base?If you win the lottery, will you buy a house?(Si ganas la lotería, ¿comprarás una casa?)If she doesn't arrive on time, will we start the meeting?(Si ella no llega a tiempo, ¿empezaremos la reunión?)
Wh- questions):no, añadimos What, Where, When, etc., al principio de la cláusula de resultado. What will you do if you lose your keys?(¿Qué harás si pierdes tus llaves?)Where will they stay if the hotel is full?(¿Dónde se quedarán si el hotel está lleno?)
Will you go if it's free? | ¿Irás si es gratis? |What will happen if I click here? | ¿Qué pasará si hago clic aquí? |Will you call me if you don't find it?
If we finish the project early, will we get a bonus?(Si terminamos el proyecto pronto, ¿recibiremos un bono?)Will you pick me up if my car doesn't start?(¿Me pasarás a buscar si mi coche no arranca?)
If I buy two shirts, will you give me a discount?(Si compro dos camisas, ¿me dará un descuento?)What will the company do if the client rejects the offer?(¿Qué hará la empresa si el cliente rechaza la oferta?)
- Advertencias y consejos (buscando opinión):
If I tell him the truth, will he be angry?(Si le digo la verdad, ¿se enfadará?)Will I feel better if I take this medicine?(¿Me sentiré mejor si tomo esta medicina?)
- Exploración de consecuencias técnicas o científicas:
What will happen to the data if the power goes out?(¿Qué pasará con los datos si se corta la luz?)
If I wake up late, will I still be able to have breakfast?.
If it will rain, will you stay home?❌ - Correcto:
If it rains, will you stay home?✅ - Por qué ocurre: Pensamos que como la situación es futura, todo debe llevar
will. Recuerda:if+ presente.
Si hablas de he, she o it, el verbo lleva -s.- Incorrecto:
If she call you, will you answer?❌ - Correcto:
Do + Sujeto + Verbo + if + Presente? | Does water boil if you heat it to 100°C? |Will + Sujeto + Verbo + if + Presente? | Will you call me if you are late? |Would + Sujeto + Verbo + if + Pasado? | Would you travel to Mars if you had the chance? |Do you get sick if you eat peanuts?(Zero: Pregunto si eres alérgico en general, es una verdad sobre ti). Will you get sick if you eat this peanut?(First: Pregunto específicamente sobre esta situación futura, tal vez este cacahuete se ve mal o sospecho que tiene algo).
going to en lugar de will en la pregunta? If it rains, are you going to cancel the party? If I finish my homework, can I go out? Unless you study, will you pass the exam? First Conditional Question Structure

Preguntas frecuentes (8)
Yes! You can say `If it rains, are you going to stay?`. It is very common in informal speech.
In English, the 'if' clause is a condition, not a future event. We use the present tense to set the 'reality' of the condition.
Absolutely. `Will you help me if I ask?` is just as correct as `If I ask, will you help me?` Just remember to remove the comma.
Yes. `If I finish, can I go?` or `If he arrives, should I call you?` are variations of the first conditional.
`Unless` means `if... not`. So, `Will you go unless it rains?` means `Will you go if it doesn't rain?`.
Only if the `if` clause comes first. If the `will` clause is first, no comma is used.
No. Use the Second Conditional (`If I were a bird...`) for imaginary things. Use First Conditional for things that might actually happen.
Use short answers: `Yes, I will.` or `No, I won't.`
