No y None: Hablando de Cero

¡Con no y none tienes las herramientas para hablar de cero y ausencia en inglés!

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'No' before a noun and 'None' when the noun is already known to say there is zero of something.

  • Use 'No' + Noun: 'I have no milk.' (max 20 words)
  • Use 'None' alone: 'How much milk? None.'
  • Use 'None of' + The/My: 'None of the milk is cold.'
🚫 + 🍎 = No apples | 🚫 = None

Overview

Abres tu nevera. Tienes hambre. Quieres un snack.
Miras dentro.
Son más directas que decir "I don't have any".
Le dan un poco de drama a tus frases. No te preocupes, aprender esto es fácil. No hay no reglas difíciles aquí.
Bueno, quizás solo unas pocas muy pequeñas. Vamos a ello.

How This Grammar Works

Piensa en no y none como socios con trabajos diferentes. No es un jugador de equipo. Siempre necesita un sustantivo al lado.
No puedes decir simplemente I have no. La gente esperará la siguiente palabra. Es como decir Tengo... y quedarte dormido.
None, sin embargo, es un lobo solitario. Se queda solo. Sustituye al sustantivo.
Si alguien pregunta:
¿Cuánta pizza queda?
, dices: None. No digas None pizza. Eso sonaría como un robot raro.
No actúa como un adjetivo. None actúa como un pronombre. También hay un tercer amigo: none of.
Este se usa cuando hablamos de un grupo específico. Como
None of my photos
o
None of these apps
. Conecta la idea del cero a un conjunto específico de cosas.
Es como ser un tiquismiquis con la comida en un buffet. Quieres cero de esas verduras específicas.

Formation Pattern

1
El uso de estas palabras sigue una estructura muy estricta. Si rompes la estructura, la frase también se rompe.
2
The no Pattern: No + Sustantivo (singular, plural o incontable).
3
Ejemplo: no coffee, no friends, no time.
4
The none Pattern: None (usado solo, normalmente al final de una frase o como respuesta corta).
5
Ejemplo: ¿Hay galletas? None.
6
The none of Pattern: None of + Determinante (the, my, these) + Sustantivo.
7
Ejemplo: None of mis seguidores le dieron a me gusta.

When To Use It

Usamos estos cuando queremos ser claros sobre el cero.
  • Enfatizar un estado vacío: Decir
    I have no money
suena más serio que "I don't have any money". Es perfecto para cuando estás sin blanca y tu amigo te pide ir a una cena elegante.
  • Responder preguntas rápidamente: Si alguien pregunta:
    ¿Cuántos correos has recibido?
y la respuesta es cero, simplemente di None. Es rápido y eficiente.
  • Hablar de grupos específicos: Usa none of para tu círculo social.
None of mis amigos usan Facebook ya
    . Resalta una tendencia.
  • Redes Sociales y Tecnología: Úsalo para errores.
    No conexión a internet
    .
    None of estos archivos funcionan
. Es el lenguaje de la era digital.
  • Escritura formal: no es muy común en carteles. No smoking. No entry. Es corto y autoritario.

Common Mistakes

Incluso los profesionales cometen errores aquí. Aquí están los más importantes a evitar:
  • La doble negación: Nunca uses no con not. ✗ "I don't have no time.« ✓ »I have no time.« o ✓ »I don't have any time." Usar dos negativos hace un positivo en matemáticas, pero en inglés, solo confunde a la gente.
  • None con un sustantivo: Nunca pongas un sustantivo directamente después de none. ✗
    I have none friends.
    I have no friends.
None es demasiado guay para los sustantivos. No los quiere cerca.
  • No con Any: No los mezcles. ✗
    There is no any milk.
    There is no milk.
    Elige un bando.
  • Concordancia del verbo: Esto es complicado. Con none of + sustantivo plural, la gente suele discutir. Algunos dicen
    None of them is happy
    . Otros dicen
    None of them are happy
. En el inglés moderno, are está totalmente bien y es muy común.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

¿En qué se diferencian de otras palabras de cero?
  • No vs. Not: Not se usa con verbos. No se usa con sustantivos.
    I am not going
    vs.
    I have no car.
  • None vs. Nothing: Nothing significa ninguna cosa. None significa
    ninguno de un grupo
    . Si alguien pregunta
    ¿Qué hay en tu bolso?
    , dices Nothing. Si preguntan
¿Cuántos bolis hay en tu bolso?
    , dices None.
  • No vs. Any: No es para verbos positivos.
    I have no milk.
Any es para verbos negativos. "I don't have any milk."

💡

¡Recuerda el sistema de 'compañero'!

'No' siempre necesita un sustantivo inmediatamente después, como un fiel compañero. Piensa: no money, no friends, no problem. ¡Son inseparables!
⚠️

¡Evita las dobles negaciones!

¡Esto es súper importante! En inglés, dos negaciones a veces se cancelan o suenan raras. Di:
I have no money
o "I don't have any money, ¡pero nunca: I don't have no money"!
🎯

¡'None' actúa en solitario!

'None' funciona mejor solo o seguido de 'of' (por ejemplo, none of them). Es un pronombre, reemplaza al sustantivo, así que no necesita un sustantivo justo después. How many? None!
🌍

¡"No worries" es súper común!

En muchos países de habla inglesa (¡especialmente Australia!), no worries es una forma amigable e informal de decir 'no hay problema' o 'está bien'. ¡Es una frase genial para añadir a tu vocabulario!
💡

Más fuerte que 'not any'

Aunque 'no' significa 'not any', usar 'no' a veces suena más directo o enfático.
I have no patience
es una afirmación más fuerte que "I don't have any patience".

Smart Tips

Just say 'None'. It's faster and more natural than saying 'I have no...'.

I have no apples. None.

Try using 'None of' with a singular verb to sound more academic.

None of the reasons are clear. None of the reasons is clear.

Switch to 'no' for a cleaner, more direct sentence.

There isn't any food. There is no food.

Always include the 'of'. You can't say 'none them'.

None them came. None of them came.

Pronunciación

Notas culturales

In formal British English, 'none' is often strictly singular ('None of them is...'). However, in modern speech, the plural is standard.

Americans almost always use the plural verb with 'none of' in casual conversation.

Double negatives like 'I ain't got no' are grammatically correct within this dialect for emphasis, though they are considered 'incorrect' in Standard Academic English.

'No' comes from the Old English 'nā', meaning 'never' or 'not'. 'None' comes from 'ne' (not) + 'ān' (one).
