Some y Any: Cantidades básicas

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'some' for positive sentences and 'any' for negative sentences and most questions when the exact amount doesn't matter.

  • Use 'some' in positive sentences: 'I have some milk.'
  • Use 'any' in negative sentences: 'I don't have any milk.'
  • Use 'any' in most questions: 'Do you have any milk?'
✅ + some | ❌ + any | ❓ + any

Overview

¿Alguna vez te has parado frente a un refrigerador abierto, mirando fijamente a un yogur solitario y preguntándote cómo decírselo a tu roomie? No quieres decir
I have one yogurt.
Aquí es donde some y any salvan tu vida social.
Si dices "I don't have some money,

How This Grammar Works

Usas some cuando te sientes positivo.
Do you have any clues?
¿La parte genial? Funcionan con sustantivos plurales (friends, cookies) y sustantivos incontables (time, coffee).

3
Revisa el sustantivo. ¿Es plural (books) o incontable (juice)? (Nota: Usamos a/an para sustantivos contables singulares como a banana).
4
Aplica la regla:
5
Positivo (+) → Usa some (p. ej., I have some friends).
6
Negativo (-) → Usa any (p. ej., I don't have any friends).
7
Pregunta (?) → Usa any (p. ej., Do you have any friends?).
8
Would you like some coffee?

When To Use It

Usarás some y any constantemente.
I have some pens and some notebooks. Suena organizado. Suena intencional.
I don't have any money on this card. Es triste, pero gramaticalmente perfecto.
  • La Vibra de
    Cazador de Información
    (any de pregunta)
: Cuando estás perdido en una ciudad nueva. Is there any WiFi here? o Are there any buses? Estás buscando datos.
  • La Vibra de Netflix and Chill (Oferta/Petición con some): Cuando estás siendo anfitrión. Do you want some popcorn? o Can I have some water?
Spent some time at the beach today.
  • Comentario en TikTok:
Does anybody else find this relatable?
  • WhatsApp: "Hey, do you have any notes from today's lecture?"
  • Compras Modernas:
  • Checkout en línea:
Do you have any promo codes?
  • App de supermercado: "We don't have any avocados in stock."

Common Mistakes

Usa I don't have any money.
  • El Any Positivo: No digas I have any idea. Se siente mal. Usa I have some ideas. Guarda any para cuando estés confundido: I don't have any idea.
  • El Error del Contable Singular: No digas I want some apple. A menos que seas una licuadora, probablemente quieres an apple o some apples. Some necesita un amigo plural o incontable.
  • La Oferta Descortés: Preguntar Do you want any cake? suena un poco como si estuvieras preguntando si el pastel es siquiera una cosa real. Es mejor decir Do you want some cake? Se siente mucho más acogedor.
  • El Any en Oraciones Positivas: I have any sugar. No, no tienes. Tienes some sugar. Usa any solo si se te acabó: I don't have any sugar.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

¿Cómo se comparan estos con a/an o many/much? Miremos la alineación:

Some/Any vs. A/An: A/An es para exactamente UNA cosa. I have a phone. Some/Any es para más de uno o algo que no puedes contar. I have some apps. I don't have any storage.
Some/Any vs. Much/Many: Much y many son para cantidades GRANDES. I have many followers. Some es solo sobre una cantidad. Es el término medio. Si tienes 5 seguidores, some es mejor que many. Si tienes 5 millones, ve con many.
Some vs. Any (La Batalla de las Preguntas):
Do you have any snacks? (Honestamente no sé si tienes).
Can I have some snacks?
Any como
No Importa Cuál
: En inglés avanzado, any puede significar
no me importa cuál
. Como Pick any movie.

Quick FAQ

Q

¿Puedo usar some con personas?

¡Sí! I saw some people at the park. Simplemente significa más de una persona.

Q

¿Es any water o any waters?

Usualmente any water.

Q

¿Por qué mi amigo dijo "I don't have some of those"?

Q

¿Puedo decir

Have you some tea?
?

Es muy anticuado y británico. Usa Do you have some tea? o Would you like some tea? en su lugar.

Q

Si no puedes poner un número enfrente (como one money o one advice), úsalo como un sustantivo incontable con some o any. ¡Es una apuesta segura!

Q

Is anybody home?

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

Yes, but only if you are offering something (`Would you like some?`) or requesting something (`Can I have some?`).

Yes, but it changes the meaning to 'it doesn't matter which'. For example, `You can take any bus`.

`A` is for one item (`a book`). `Some` is for multiple items (`some books`) or uncountable things (`some water`).

Use `any` before a noun (`any books`). Use `any of` before a determiner like 'the' or 'my' (`any of the books`).

This is a double negative used in some dialects, but it is grammatically incorrect in standard English. You should say `I don't have any`.

Usually no, unless you mean 'it doesn't matter which'. Standard negative is `I don't have any books` (plural).

No, it can be used with uncountable singular nouns like `some luggage` or `some advice`.

They follow the same rules as 'any'. Use them in questions and negatives. They are interchangeable.
