Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Transition adverbials are 'signposts' that tell your reader how the next sentence relates to the previous one.
- Use a comma after the adverbial when starting a sentence (e.g., 'However, ...').
- Choose the word based on the relationship: contrast, addition, or result.
- Don't over-use them; sometimes a simple 'But' or 'And' is better for flow.
Overview
En lugar de esperar que tu interlocutor adivine que estás presentando un contraargumento, usas on the other hand para anunciarlo directamente.furthermore, moreover, additionally, in addition | Además, es más, adicionalmente |however, in contrast, on the other hand, conversely | Sin embargo, por el contrario, por otro lado |nevertheless, nonetheless, all the same, even so | No obstante, a pesar de ello, aun así |consequently, therefore, as a result, thus | Por consiguiente, por lo tanto, como resultado |for example, for instance, to illustrate, specifically | Por ejemplo, para ilustrar, específicamente |in other words, that is to say, to put it another way | En otras palabras, es decir |indeed, in fact, as a matter of fact, above all | De hecho, en realidad, sobre todo |firstly, subsequently, meanwhile, finally | En primer lugar, posteriormente, mientras tanto |actually.
[Transition Adverbial], + [Independent Clause]. - Ejemplo:
The deadline was approaching. Therefore, the team had to work overtime.(La fecha límite se acercaba. - Ejemplo:
The marketing campaign was a success. Moreover, it cost less than expected.(La campaña de marketing fue un éxito. Además, costó menos de lo esperado).
semicolon).
[Independent Clause]; + [transition adverbial], + [Independent Clause]. - Ejemplo:
The experiment produced a wealth of data; however, interpreting it has proven difficult.(El experimento produjo una gran cantidad de datos; sin embargo, interpretarlos ha resultado difícil). - Ejemplo:
[Subject], + [transition adverbial], + [Verb Phrase]. - Ejemplo:
The committee, however, decided against the proposal.(El comité, sin embargo, decidió rechazar la propuesta). - Ejemplo:
The new evidence, therefore, changes our understanding of the case.(La nueva evidencia, por lo tanto, cambia nuestra comprensión del caso).

The team practiced for months, however, they lost. - Correcto (con punto):
The team practiced for months. However, they lost. - Correcto (con punto y coma):
The team practiced for months; however, they lost.
The weather was terrible. Moreover, the picnic was cancelled.(Aquí parece que cancelar el picnic es solo otro dato más del clima, no una consecuencia). - Correcto:
The weather was terrible. Therefore, the picnic was cancelled.
but, so, and) y los adverbios de transición (como however, therefore, furthermore). Aunque expresan ideas similares, se comportan de forma distinta en la oración.but | however / nevertheless | but une dos frases en una sola con coma. however empieza una nueva frase con punto. |so | therefore / consequently | so es informal/neutro. therefore es formal y requiere puntuación fuerte. |and | furthermore / moreover | and es para listas o ideas simples. Los adverbios añaden peso a un argumento. |because | as a result / for this reason | because introduce una razón dentro de la frase. Los adverbios muestran el resultado después. |- B1:
I was tired, but I finished the report.(Correcto, pero simple). - B2:
I was exhausted. Nevertheless, I managed to complete the report on time.(Mucho más profesional y preciso).
But o And en lugar de usar However o Furthermore?transition adverbials para empezar oraciones.
