clarté et paraître fluent.
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Transition adverbials are 'signposts' that tell your reader how the next sentence relates to the previous one.
- Use a comma after the adverbial when starting a sentence (e.g., 'However, ...').
- Choose the word based on the relationship: contrast, addition, or result.
- Don't over-use them; sometimes a simple 'But' or 'And' is better for flow.
Overview
The project was expensive. We decided to continue.(Le lien est implicite, on devine une opposition). - 2
The project was expensive. Nevertheless, we decided to continue.(Ici,neverthelesssignale immédiatement une concession. C'est beaucoup plus pro).
furthermore, moreover, additionally | De plus, en outre, par ailleurs |however, in contrast, on the other hand | Cependant, en revanche, par contre |nevertheless, nonetheless, even so | Néanmoins, toutefois, malgré cela |consequently, therefore, as a result, thus | Par conséquent, donc, de ce fait |for instance, to illustrate, specifically | Par exemple, notamment, plus précisément |in other words, that is to say | En d'autres termes, c'est-à-dire |indeed, in fact, as a matter of fact | En effet, en fait, d'ailleurs |firstly, subsequently, finally | Premièrement, par la suite, enfin |run-on sentences (des phrases qui ne s'arrêtent jamais).- Structure :
[Phrase 1]. [Transition Adverbial], [Phrase 2]. The market is volatile. However, our investments remain stable. We missed the deadline. Consequently, the client was unhappy.
;). L'adverbe suit le point-virgule et reste suivi d'une virgule.- Structure :
[Proposition 1]; [transition adverbial], [Proposition 2]. The results were inconclusive; therefore, more testing is required. The hotel was expensive; furthermore, the service was poor.
- Structure :
[Sujet], [transition adverbial], [Verbe/Reste de la phrase]. The CEO, however, disagreed with the strategy. This decision, therefore, will be implemented next month.
Firstly, I will present the budget. Secondly, I will outline the timeline. Finally, we will discuss the risks.
But... de façon trop directe, car cela peut paraître agressif. Utiliser On the other hand ou However permet de présenter une opposition de manière plus équilibrée.I understand your point. However, we must consider the legal implications.
As a result ou Consequently montre que ta conclusion n'est pas une opinion, mais une suite logique des faits. The server crashed three times last week. Consequently, we need to upgrade our hardware.
In other words permet de s'assurer que tout le monde est sur la même longueur d'onde. The system is redundant. In other words, if one part fails, another takes over.
transition adverbial n'est pas une colle assez forte pour lier deux phrases avec une simple virgule.- Incorrect :
I like the proposal, however, it is too expensive.(C'est une erreur grammaticale grave en anglais). - Correct :
I like the proposal. However, it is too expensive. - Correct :
I like the proposal; however, it is too expensive.
Actually, en pensant dire « Actuellement ».Actuallysignifie « En réalité » ou « En fait ».- Pour dire « Actuellement », utilise
CurrentlyouAt the moment.
Actually, the project is finished, tu es en train de corriger quelqu'un qui pensait que le projet n'était pas fini, tu n'es pas en train de donner une information temporelle.- Trop lourd :
I went to the office. Moreover, I met the manager. Consequently, we talked about the budget. - Plus naturel :
I went to the office and met the manager to talk about the budget.
transition adverbials avec les conjunctions (coordination ou subordination). Bien qu'ils expriment des idées similaires, leur grammaire est totalement différente.and, but, so, or | Relient deux propositions dans une seule phrase avec une virgule. | It was raining, so we stayed home. |although, because, since | Introduisent une proposition dépendante. | Because it was raining, we stayed home. |however, therefore, moreover | Commencent une nouvelle phrase ou suivent un point-virgule. | It was raining. Therefore, we stayed home. |but, so) ne peut jamais être déplacée en milieu de phrase. Un adverbe de transition (however, therefore), lui, peut bouger (voir le Pattern 3).- On peut dire :
The plan, however, failed. - On ne peut pas dire :
The plan, but, failed.
But ou So ?However (pour but) ou Therefore / Consequently (pour so). Cela donne plus de poids à ton propos. However et Nevertheless ?However est le terme général pour l'opposition (comme « cependant »). Nevertheless est plus fort, il exprime une concession malgré un obstacle (comme « néanmoins » ou « malgré tout »). On l'utilise quand le deuxième fait est surprenant au vu du premier. The weather was bad; however, we went out.(Simple opposition). The team was exhausted and injured. Nevertheless, they won the match.(C'est un exploit, on souligne la persévérance).
In fact veut dire la même chose que Indeed ?Indeed sert à confirmer ou renforcer ce qui vient d'être dit (souvent pour être d'accord avec quelqu'un). In fact sert souvent à apporter une précision qui va plus loin que ce qu'on imaginait, ou même à corriger une idée reçue.It’s very cold. Indeed, it’s the coldest day of the year.I thought he was British. In fact, he’s Canadian.
