Combine two verbs to show direction, benefit, or attempts; the second verb modifies the first one's meaning.

  • Place the main action first, then the modifying verb (e.g., 'go' + 'see').
  • Use 'pay' (ပေး) as the second verb to mean 'doing for someone'.
  • Use 'kyi' (ကြည့်) as the second verb to mean 'trying' an action.

Meanings

In Burmese, two verbs are often placed side-by-side where the second verb functions as an auxiliary to provide additional context such as direction, intention, or benefit.

1

Benefactive (Doing for others)

Using 'pay' (ပေး) to indicate the action is performed for someone else's benefit.

“စာရေးပေးပါ (Sar-yay-pay-par) - Please write it for me.”

“ဝယ်ပေးမယ် (Wal-pay-mal) - I will buy it for you.”

2

Attemptive (Trying out)

Using 'kyi' (ကြည့်) to indicate trying an action to see the result.

“စားကြည့်ပါ (Sar-kyi-par) - Please try eating it.”

“ဝတ်ကြည့်မယ် (Wut-kyi-mal) - I will try wearing it.”

3

Directional/Sequential

Combining movement verbs like 'go' (သွား) or 'come' (လာ) with actions.

“ယူလာတယ် (Yu-lar-tal) - Brought it (Take + Come).”

“ဝယ်သွားတယ် (Wal-thwar-tal) - Bought and went (Buy + Go).”

Errores comunes

ကြည့်စားတယ်

စားကြည့်တယ်

In English we say 'Try to eat', but Burmese puts the main action first.

ပေးလုပ်တယ်

လုပ်ပေးတယ်

The 'favor' verb (ပေး) must come second.

စားမကြည့်ဘူး

မစားကြည့်ဘူး

Negation 'ma' must go before the entire verb stack.

ယူသွားပါ (when coming to speaker)

ယူလာပါ

Confusing 'go' and 'come' directionals.

ပြောပြပေးပါ (redundant use)

ပြောပြပါ

Sometimes learners stack too many auxiliaries when one is enough.

လုပ်ဖို့ကြည့်မယ်

လုပ်ကြည့်မယ်

Don't use the 'to' particle (ဖို့) between stacked verbs.

မလုပ်ပေးနိုင်ဘူး

လုပ်မပေးနိုင်ဘူး

With three verbs, negation placement becomes tricky; usually it negates the ability, not the favor.

ဖော်ဆောင်ရွက် (wrong sequence)

ဆောင်ရွက်ဖော်

In formal registers, the sequence of conceptual verbs is very rigid.

အခု လာခဲ့မယ် (I'm coming now).

🎯

The 'Pay' Rule

Whenever you ask someone to do something for you, always add 'pay' (ပေး). It turns a command into a polite request.
⚠️

Direction Matters

Be careful with 'thwar' (go) and 'lar' (come). If you say 'take-go' (yu-thwar) to someone bringing you coffee, they will walk away with it!
💡

Try everything

Use 'kyi' (ကြည့်) for anything new: eating, wearing, visiting, or even listening to a song.

Smart Tips

Always use 'kyi' (try) when asking to see or touch items. It sounds less demanding.

ဒါ ကြည့်မယ် (I will look at this). ဒါ ကြည့်ကြည့်မယ် (I will try looking at this).

Don't just say 'I will do it'. Add 'pay' to show it's for them.

ကျွန်တော် လုပ်မယ် (I will do it). ကျွန်တော် လုပ်ပေးမယ် (I will do it for you).

Think of the sequence of events. If you 'take' then 'go', it's 'yu-thwar'.

ယူတယ် ပြီးတော့ သွားတယ် (Take and then go). ယူသွားတယ် (Take-go).

Pronunciación

In 'lote-pay', 'pay' is shorter than when used alone.

V2 Weakening

The second verb often loses its heavy tone and is pronounced more quickly/lightly.

Desafío

Look at 5 things in your room and say 'I will give/do [Action] for my friend' using V + ပေးမယ်.

Notas culturales

Using 'pay' (ပေး) is not just grammar; it's a social requirement. Doing an action for someone without adding 'pay' can sound blunt or rude, as if you are just performing a robotic task rather than a favor.

Speakers in Mandalay often use more elaborate V-V stacks to show extreme politeness, sometimes adding 3 or 4 verbs in a row.

Serial verb constructions are a core feature of the Tibeto-Burman language family, dating back thousands of years.

Yes! You can say `ပြောပြပေးပါ` (Speak-Show-Give) which means 'Please explain it to me'. Burmese often stacks 3 or 4 verbs.

In a V-V combination, yes. If used alone, it means 'to give' an object.

Put `မ` at the very start. `မလုပ်ပေးဘူး` (I won't do it for you).

Yes, it sounds softer than a direct command. `စားပါ` (Eat!) vs `စားကြည့်ပါ` (Please try eating).

`ယူလာ` means 'bring it here'. `လာယူ` means 'come and get it'. The order of actions matters!

Yes, `လုပ်ပေးနိုင်တယ်` means 'I can do it for you'. The 'can' usually goes at the very end of the stack.

`သွားကြည့်` implies you have to go somewhere else to see it. `ကြည့်` just means look at what is here.
