The Arabic word 'قهوة' (qahwah) for coffee has a rich and debated history. One prominent theory suggests its origin in the Kaffa region of Ethiopia, where coffee beans are believed to have first been discovered. Another theory traces it back to the Arabic word 'qahā', meaning 'to lack hunger' or 'to diminish appetite', referring to coffee's initial use as a stimulant among Sufi mystics to stay awake during long prayers. The beverage gained widespread popularity in the Arabian Peninsula, particularly in Yemen, where it was cultivated and prepared. From there, it spread throughout the Ottoman Empire and eventually to Europe. The term 'باردة' (bāridah) simply means 'cold' in Arabic, deriving from the root ب-ر-د (b-r-d) which signifies coldness or cooling. Therefore, 'قهوة باردة' directly translates to 'cold coffee', indicating coffee that is served chilled or at a low temperature, a concept that likely emerged as refrigeration became more common and a desire for refreshing beverages in hot climates increased.
