Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the suffix -dı⁴ to describe actions you personally witnessed or that happened just a moment ago.
- Add -dı, -di, -du, or -dü to the verb stem based on vowel harmony: 'gəldi' (he/she came).
- Use 'indicə' (just now) or 'yenicə' (recently) to emphasize the recency: 'İndicə bitirdim' (I just finished).
- The negative is formed by adding -ma/-mə before the tense suffix: 'yazmadı' (he/she didn't write).
Meanings
The Definite Past Tense in Azerbaijani is used to express actions that were completed in the past, specifically those the speaker witnessed or is certain about. When paired with temporal adverbs, it perfectly expresses the 'Recent Past'.
Immediate Past
Actions that finished seconds or minutes before the moment of speaking.
“Qapı indicə açıldı.”
“Yeməyimi bitirdim.”
Witnessed Events
Actions the speaker saw with their own eyes, regardless of how long ago they happened.
“Dünən onu parkda gördüm.”
“Biz keçən il Bakıya getdik.”
Sequential Actions
Used in storytelling to describe a series of completed events.
“İçəri girdi, oturdu və çay sifariş etdi.”
“Oyandı, hazırlaşdı və evdən çıxdı.”

Smart Tips
Instead of saying 'Mən buradayam' (I am here), say 'Gəldim!' (I came/I've arrived).
Look at the very last vowel of the verb. If it has a dot (i, ü), the suffix will likely have a dot (di, dü).
Use -dı even if you didn't see it, to show you stake your reputation on the fact.
Remember that -ma/-mə always comes BEFORE the tense suffix. Think of it as 'cancelling' the verb before the time is even added.
تلفظ
The 'd' sound
The 'd' in -dı is soft and dental, similar to the 'd' in 'day' but with the tongue touching the teeth.
Stress
The stress usually falls on the tense suffix -dı, but moves to the syllable before -ma/-mə in negative forms.
Question Intonation
Gəldin? ↗
Rising pitch at the end indicates a question without needing a particle.
Memorize It
Mnemonic
Remember 'DI' for 'Direct Information' — you saw it happen!
Visual Association
Imagine a judge hitting a gavel. The action is finished, decided, and witnessed. The sound of the gavel is the 'D' in -dı.
Rhyme
A, I, use DI. E, Ə, İ, use DI. O, U, use DU. Ö, Ü, use DÜ.
Story
A detective arrives at a crime scene. He says 'Gəldim' (I arrived). He looks at the evidence and says 'Gördüm' (I saw). He writes his report: 'Yazdım' (I wrote). Everything he does is definite because he is the witness.

نکات فرهنگی
Azerbaijanis value directness when reporting facts. Using the -dı tense shows you are reliable and actually saw what happened.
In Tabriz and other southern regions, the pronunciation of the suffix might be slightly more closed, but the grammar remains identical.
In some villages, the 'lar' ending for 'they' is often dropped in casual speech if the subject is already mentioned.
The -dı suffix originates from the Old Turkic suffix '-tı', which was used to denote completed, witnessed actions.

Technically no. If you didn't see it, you should use the Indefinite Past `-ıb⁴`. However, if you are 100% sure of the fact, you can use `-dı⁴`.
No! Azerbaijani verbs are incredibly regular. Even 'to be' (olmaq) and 'to go' (getmək) follow the standard rules.
Use the word `indicə` with the `-dı⁴` tense. Example: `İndicə bitirdim` (I just finished).
`-dı` is for 'he/she/it', while `-dıq` is for 'we'. Vowel harmony might change them to `-di/-dik`, etc.
In casual speech, the plural suffix `-lar/-lər` is often omitted if the subject 'Onlar' is explicitly mentioned.
In modern standard Azerbaijani verb conjugation, no. It stays as 'd'. This is a major difference from Turkish.
Yes, as long as you witnessed it. `Mən 1990-cı ildə məktəbə getdim` (I went to school in 1990) is perfectly correct.
The easiest way is to use rising intonation on the verb. `Gəldin?` (Did you come?).
