Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To negate the optative (wish/suggestion), insert the negative suffix '-ma/-mə' immediately after the verb root.

  • Add '-ma' or '-mə' to the verb root: 'get-' (go) becomes 'getmə-' (not go).
  • Follow with the optative suffix: '-yim/-yım/-yum/-yüm' for 1st person singular.
  • Result: 'getməyim' (let me not go / I shouldn't go).
Root + (ma/mə) + (y)im/yım/yum/yüm
