Second Conditional) و بهویژه تفاوت بین If I were و If I was است. در زبان فارسی، ما برای بیان آرزوها یا شرایط غیرواقعی، معمولاً از «وجه التزامی» (Subjunctive Mood) در کنار زمان گذشته استفاده میکنیم (مثلاً: «اگر من جای تو بودم...»). اما در انگلیسی، این ساختار با ظرافتهای خاصی همراه است که مستقیماً با مفهوم «غیرواقعی بودن» (Unreality) گره خورده است.were برای تمام اشخاص (حتی برای I, he, she) دچار سردرگمی میشوند. در فارسی، فعل «بودن» برای «من» میشود «بودم» و برای «او» میشود «بود». اما در انگلیسی، در جملات شرطی نوع دوم، ما با یک «قانون طلایی» روبرو هستیم: برای بیان موقعیتهای خیالی، فعل to be برای همه فاعلها به were تبدیل میشود.were ظاهر میشود. به این ساختار Subjunctive Mood گفته میشود.was و were یک مرز دقیق بین «واقعیت» و «خیال» ایجاد میکند.If I was، شنونده انگلیسیزبان ممکن است فکر کند شما درباره یک اتفاق واقعی در گذشته صحبت میکنید. اما وقتی میگویید If I were، بلافاصله به مخاطب علامت میدهید که: «این یک فرض خیالی است». برای مثال، در محیطهای دانشگاهی یا جلسات کاری، اگر بخواهید نظر بدهید، میگویید If I were in your position, I would... wasبه جایwereبرای فاعلهای مفرد: این رایجترین اشتباه فارسیزبانان است. چون در فارسی «من بودم» و «او بود» داریم، زبانآموز فکر میکند بایدwasرا برایIاستفاده کند. اما در انگلیسیِ شرطی،wereبرای همه یکسان است.

willدر بخش نتیجه: فارسیزبانان گاهی در بخش نتیجه به جایwouldازwillاستفاده میکنند (مثلاً:If I were you, I will go). این اشتباه به دلیل ترجمه مستقیم از فارسی به انگلیسی رخ میدهد. باید به خاطر داشته باشید که وقتی شرط خیالی است، نتیجه هم باید در همان فضای خیالی باقی بماند (would).
