If I Were vs. If I Was (شرطی دوم)

برای موقعیت‌های رسمی و فرضی از If I were استفاده کن، و برای گپ‌های دوستانه روزمره If I was رو به کار ببر.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'were' instead of 'was' after 'if' to show a situation is imaginary, impossible, or just a dream.

  • Use 'were' for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) in hypothetical 'if' clauses. Example: 'If I were rich...'
  • Use 'would' in the second part of the sentence to show the result. Example: '...I would travel.'
  • In casual speech, 'was' is common, but 'were' is the gold standard for exams and formal writing.

### Overview
### How This Grammar Works
If I were in your position, I would... (اگر جای شما بودم...).
استفاده از were در اینجا نشان‌دهنده احترام و حرفه‌ای بودن شماست. این ساختار به نوعی «وجه مودبانه» و «وجه غیرواقعی» را همزمان منتقل می‌کند. فارسی‌زبانان باید به یاد داشته باشند که were در اینجا نشان‌دهنده زمان گذشته نیست، بلکه نشان‌دهنده «حالتِ غیرواقعی» (Hypothetical Mode) است.
### Formation Pattern
ساختار شرطی نوع دوم از دو بخش تشکیل شده است: بخش شرط (if clause) و بخش نتیجه (main clause). در بخش شرط، ما از زمان گذشته ساده استفاده می‌کنیم (که برای فعل to be همیشه were است) و در بخش نتیجه از would به همراه شکل ساده فعل استفاده می‌کنیم.
| بخش جمله | ساختار | مثال |
|---|---|---|
| If Clause (شرط) | If + Subject + were/past verb | If I were rich, |
| Main Clause (نتیجه) | Subject + would + base verb | I would travel. |
مثال‌های بیشتر:
  • If she were here, she would help us. (او اینجا نیست، پس این یک فرض است)
  • If I were a bird, I would fly to Shiraz. (من پرنده نیستم، پس این خیالی است)
  • If they had enough money, they would buy a new car. (آن‌ها فعلاً پول ندارند)
### When To Use It
استفاده از این ساختار در موقعیت‌های زیر بسیار رایج است:
  1. 1بیان آرزوها و تصورات: وقتی درباره چیزی حرف می‌زنید که در حال حاضر امکان‌پذیر نیست. مثلاً در یک دورهمی دوستانه درباره نوروز صحبت می‌کنید: If I were on holiday now, I would be in Isfahan.
If the budget were higher, we would finish the project sooner.
### Common Mistakes
  1. 1استفاده از was به جای were برای فاعل‌های مفرد: این رایج‌ترین اشتباه فارسی‌زبانان است. چون در فارسی «من بودم» و «او بود» داریم، زبان‌آموز فکر می‌کند باید was را برای I استفاده کند. اما در انگلیسیِ شرطی، were برای همه یکسان است.
  1. 1استفاده از will در بخش نتیجه: فارسی‌زبانان گاهی در بخش نتیجه به جای would از will استفاده می‌کنند (مثلاً: If I were you, I will go).
If were rich غلط است؛ حتماً باید بگویید If I were rich.
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
تفاوت اصلی بین شرطی نوع اول (واقعی) و نوع دوم (خیالی) در جدول زیر آمده است:
| نوع شرطی | ساختار (شرط) | معنا |
|---|---|---|
| اول (First) | If + present simple | ممکن و واقعی (اگر باران ببارد، خانه می‌مانم) |
| دوم (Second) | If + simple past (were) | غیرواقعی و خیالی (اگر باران می‌بارید، خانه می‌ماندم) |
### Quick FAQ
۱. آیا واقعاً استفاده از If I was همیشه غلط است؟
در مکالمات بسیار دوستانه و غیررسمی، برخی انگلیسی‌زبانان از was استفاده می‌کنند، اما در آزمون‌های بین‌المللی (مثل آیلتس) و محیط‌های حرفه‌ای، استفاده از were الزامی است.
۲. آیا می‌توانم در شرطی نوع دوم از could استفاده کنم؟
بله، می‌توانید بگویید If I were richer, I could buy a house. این نشان‌دهنده توانایی یا امکان است.
۳. آیا این ساختار فقط برای زمان حال است؟
بله، شرطی نوع دوم به زمان حال یا آینده مربوط می‌شود که در آن شرایط برخلاف واقعیت است.

No. It's common in casual speech. However, in formal writing or exams, 'If I were' is the only accepted form for hypothetical situations.

Because it's not the past tense; it's the 'subjunctive mood'. In this mood, the verb 'to be' becomes 'were' for all people.

Yes! This is a more formal way to say 'If I went'. It makes the event sound even more unlikely.

'If I were' is for the present (imagining now). 'If I had been' is for the past (imagining a different past).

Yes, especially in the phrase `If I were you`. In other cases, many native speakers use `was` casually, but `were` remains the standard for educated speech.

In questions, we usually flip the 'would' part: 'Would you help me if I were in trouble?'

No, only the verb 'to be' has a special subjunctive form ('were'). Other verbs just use their normal past tense form (e.g., 'If I *had* more time...').

Similarly to 'if', 'I wish I were' is the formal/correct version, while 'I wish I was' is common in casual speech.
