can و فعل ساده میتونی خیلی راحت و با اعتماد به نفس در مورد «مهارتها» و «تواناییهای فیزیکی» الان خودت حرف بزنی.

- No 'to' after can: 'I can swim', not 'I can to swim'.

can رو به عنوان یه modal verb (فعل وجهی) در نظر بگیر. این فقط یه اسم باکلاسه برای اینکه بگیم این کلمه یه «کمکیه». به فعلِ اصلیِ جمله کمک میکنه تا نشون بده چه چیزی ممکنه.he یا she بهش -s اضافه نمیکنی. برای گذشته هم تهش -ed نمیذاری. همونطوری can میمونه.to استفاده نمیکنی. میگیم can swim نه can to swim.can + شکل ساده فعل = موفقیت. این کلمه نزدیکترین چیز به «کد تقلب» توی گرامر انگلیسیه. کاش یاد گرفتن گیتار هم به همین راحتی بود!
الگوی ساخت
can مثل بازی با قطعات لگو میمونه؛ فقط کافیه اونا رو به هم وصل کنی. اینم دستورالعمل مخفی برای موفقیت:
-ing نه -s و نه -ed.
not رو اضافه کنی. ما معمولاً اونا رو سر هم میکنیم و میگیم can't. وقتی داری با دوستات گپ میزنی، اینطوری خیلی طبیعیتر به نظر میرسه. برای سوالی کردن هم فقط جای فاعل و can رو عوض کن. درست مثل یه حرکت رقص کوچولو!

کی استفاده کنیم
can برای سه «طعم» اصلی از توانایی در زمان حال استفاده میکنیم:- مهارتهای عمومی (General Skills): اینها چیزهایی هستن که یادشون گرفتی. مثلاً کدنویسی، اسپانیایی حرف زدن یا رانندگی.
من میتونم (
can) راننده اوبر بشم. - تواناییهای فیزیکی (Physical Abilities): کارهایی که بدنت همین الان میتونه انجام بده.
اون میتونه (
یاcan) ماراتن بدوئهمن میتونم (
(البته اگه روزِ خوبم باشه!).can) انگشتهای پام رو لمس کنم - تواناییهای ذهنی (Mental Abilities): کارهایی که مغزت انجام میده.

بالاخره میتونم (can) یه وعده غذای کامل بپزم! یا یه کامنت تیکتاک: چطوری میتونی (can) اینطوری برقصی؟. برای پیدا کردن کار هم خیلی حیاتیه.من میتونم (can) تیمهای بزرگ رو به طور موثر مدیریت کنم. این کلمه، زبانِ اعتمادبهنفسه. فقط ازش برای قول دادنِ کارهایی که واقعاً نمیتونی انجام بدی استفاده نکن، مثلاً نگو میتونم (can) این پروژه رو توی ۵ دقیقه تموم کنم؛ جفتمون میدانیم که این یه دروغه!

canفقط برای زمان حاله. اگه داری درباره دوران کودکیت حرف میزنی، ازcouldاستفاده کن. - فعل کمکی دوبل: نگو

can't do anything. اینطوری خیلی باهوشتر و خوشبیانتر به نظر میرسی.

can یه پسرخاله داره به اسم be able to. اونا تقریباً یه کار رو انجام میدن، اما حس و حالشون با هم فرق میکنه.- Can: این همون پسرخاله «باحالهست». غیررسمیه، سریعه و ۹۰ درصد مواقع از همین استفاده میشه. با دوستات، خانواده و توی اکثر ایمیلها ازش استفاده کن.
- Be able to: این یکی پسرخاله «کتوشلواریه». رسمیتره. توی مدارک رسمی یا زمانهایی که
canاز نظر گرامری کار نمیکنه (مثلاً بعد ازwill) ازش استفاده میکنی.
