Could: صحبت کردن درباره مهارت‌های گذشته شما

خلاصه کلام اینکه، از could استفاده می‌کنی تا درباره قابلیت‌های «گذشته» و «همیشگی» که قبلاً داشتی حرف بزنی.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'could' to describe general talents or skills you had in the past, like speaking a language or swimming.

  • Use 'could' for general past abilities: 'I could run fast.'
  • Use 'couldn't' for all past failures: 'I couldn't find my keys.'
  • Never add -s, -ed, or -ing to 'could' or the main verb.

6
Form | Example | Translation
7
--- | --- | ---
8
Positive | I could swim. | Ich konnte schwimmen.
9
Negative | You couldn't dance. | Du konntest nicht tanzen.
10
Question | Could she sing? | Konnte sie singen?
11
Negative Question | Couldn't they see? | Konnten sie nicht sehen?
12
دقت کردی که could اصلاً عوض نمیشه؟ I could ، She could ، The dog could.

I could speak French when I lived in Paris.
I could feel the bass.
سوم، برای فرآیندهای «ذهنی» ازش استفاده می‌کنیم. اگه داشتی به یه مسئله‌ی پیچیده‌ی ریاضی نگاه می‌کردی و یهو دوزاریت افتاد،
you could understand it
(می‌تونستی بفهمیش).
بیا چند تا مثال امروزی‌تر رو ببینیم. تصور کن داری درباره‌ی گوشی قدیمی‌ت از سال ۲۰۱۰ حرف می‌زنی. ممکنه بگی:
My old Nokia could last for a week on one charge.
(نوکیای قدیمی من با یه بار شارژ می‌تونست یه هفته دووم بیاره).
این یه توانایی کلیه. یا به یه بازی ویدیویی که قدیما بازی می‌کردی فکر کن:
I could beat the final boss in ten minutes.

I could to play guitar.
این یه اشتباهِ بزرگه! فکر کن could و to دو تا سلبریتی هستن که یه جداییِ جنجالی داشتن؛ اونا اصلاً نمی‌تونن توی یه اتاق با هم باشن. همیشه میگیم could play و هیچ‌وقت نمیگیم could to play.
یه اشتباه دیگه، استفاده از could برای یه موفقیتِ «یک‌باره» هست. اگه دیروز موفق شدی ایرپادهای گم‌شده‌ت رو پیدا کنی، نباید بگی
I could find them.
کلمه‌ی could برای مهارت‌های کلیه، نه برای اون لحظات خاصِ «بالاخره انجامش دادم!». برای اون بردهایِ یک‌باره، معمولاً از was able to یا managed to استفاده می‌کنیم.
در نهایت، یادت نره که couldn't حلالِ همه‌ی مشکلاته! در حالی که could روی «کلی» یا «خاص» بودنِ توانایی حساسه، برای couldn't اصلاً فرقی نمی‌کنه. تو می‌تونی از couldn't هم برای نبودِ توانایی به صورت کلی استفاده کنی ("I couldn't swim as a kid« - بچگی بلد نبودم شنا کنم) و هم برای یه شکستِ خاص (»I couldn't find the link for the Zoom call today" - امروز نتونستم لینکِ زوم رو پیدا کنم). این کلمه مثل چاقوی سوئیسی برای نشون دادنِ ناتوانی در گذشته‌ست. هوشمندانه ازش استفاده کن و نذار باعث بشه خیلی بدبین به نظر بیای؛ هیچ‌کس از یه آدمِ «من که نمی‌تونستم» خوشش نمیاد!

مقایسه با الگوهای مشابه

بزرگترین تقابل توی گرامر انگلیسی، بین Could و Was able to هست. اونا شبیه دوقلوها هستن، اما شخصیت‌های متفاوتی دارن:
  • از Could برای توانایی‌های کلی و طولانی‌مدت استفاده کن. (مثلاً:
I could run fast in school.
    - توی مدرسه می‌تونستم تند بدوم.)
  • از Was able to برای دستاوردهای خاص و یک‌باره استفاده کن. (مثلاً:
I was able to finish the report by 5 PM.
    - موفق شدم گزارش رو تا ساعت ۵ تموم کنم.)
اینطوری بهش فکر کن: Could استعدادِ توئه، اما Was able to اون بردِ خاصِ توئه. اگه بگی
I could open the jar
، انگار یه استعدادِ مادرزادی در باز کردنِ شیشه‌ی مربا داشتی! اما اگه بگی
I was able to open the jar
، یعنی اون شیشه‌ی خاص یه ذره اذیت کرد، ولی بالاخره شکستش دادی و بازش کردی.
همچنین این رو با Used to مقایسه کن. Used to روی «عادت» تمرکز داره، در حالی که could روی «توانایی» تمرکز می‌کنه.
I used to swim
یعنی تو اغلب به استخر می‌رفتی.
I could swim
یعنی تو بلد بودی چطوری روی آب بمونی. می‌تونی برای اینکه حس نوستالژی رو به سقف بچسبونی، هر دو رو با هم استفاده کنی:
I used to go to the beach because I could swim well.
(قدیما می‌رفتم ساحل چون خوب بلد بودم شنا کنم). این دیگه یه دوزِ قوی از «یادش بخیرِ قدیم‌ها»ست.

سؤالات رایج

Q

آیا could فقط برای گذشته‌ست؟

بیشتر اوقات بله، اما برای درخواست‌های مودبانه در زمان حال هم ازش استفاده می‌کنیم (

Could you help me?
- میشه بهم کمک کنی؟). توی این درس، ما فقط داریم روی نسخه‌ی «توانایی در گذشته» تمرکز می‌کنیم. همه‌چیز به کانتکست (context) و متن بستگی داره!

Q

آیا می‌تونم از could برای کسایی که فوت کردن استفاده کنم؟

بله. اگه داری درباره‌ی یه شخصیت تاریخی حرف می‌زنی، باید از could استفاده کنی.

Einstein could solve complex equations in his head.
(انیشتین می‌تونست معادلات پیچیده رو توی ذهنش حل کنه).

Q

تفاوت بین couldn't و can't چیه؟

کلمه‌ی can't برای الانه، اما couldn't برای اون موقع‌هاست. "I can't find my phone now, but I couldn't find my keys yesterday." (الان نمی‌تونم گوشیم رو پیدا کنم، اما دیروز هم نتونسته بودم کلیدهام رو پیدا کنم).

Q

آیا به فعل کمکی مثل did نیاز دارم؟

نه! could قوی و مستقله. نمی‌گیم I did could؛ فقط می‌گیم I could. اون مثل یه خواننده‌ی سولو می‌مونه که به گروه کُر یا نوازنده‌ی کمکی نیاز نداره.

سوالات متداول (8)

Generally, no. In affirmative sentences, use `managed to` or `was able to` for specific events. However, you can use `couldn't` for specific failures.

`Could` is for general skills (like 'I could swim'). `Was able to` is for both general skills and specific moments (like 'I was able to escape').

No. Never use `to` after `could`. Say `I could go`, not `I could to go`.

Not necessarily. `Could` is very common in all registers. `Was able to` can sound slightly more formal or precise in specific contexts.

No. Modal verbs like `could` never change their form. It is always `could` for all subjects.

Verbs of the senses (see, hear, smell) are an exception. We often use `could` with them even for specific moments: `I could see him clearly.`

Move `could` to the front of the sentence: `Could you speak English ten years ago?`

Yes! While affirmative `could` is for general ability, negative `couldn't` works for both general and specific situations.
