(میشه نمک رو بدی؟)، مثل حرفهایها به نظر میرسی. این قاعده کلاً دربارهی could هست.could باعث میشه دایرکتهات خیلی حرفهایتر به نظر بیاد.can استفاده کنی، انگار تیشرت پوشیدی؛ اما اگه از could استفاده کنی، انگار برای یه مصاحبهی کاری توی زوم، یه کت شیک پوشیدی. فقط ازش برای ساکت کردن سگت استفاده نکن؛ چون در هر صورت احتمالاً به حرفت گوش نمیده!این گرامر چطور کار میکنه
could یه فعلِ modal verb هست. این فعلها خاص هستن چون هیچوقت تغییر نمیکنن. هیچوقت بهشون -s یا -ed یا -ing اضافه نمیکنی.could شکلِ گذشتهی فعلِ can هست.could داری درخواستت رو غیرمستقیمتر میکنی. اینجوری به طرف مقابل فضای بیشتری میدی که اگه خواست «نه» بگه، معذب نشه. یه جورایی مثل این میمونه که به جای اینکه بری توی صورتِ طرف، چند قدم عقبتر بایستی.could استفاده میکنی، داری دربارهی «امکانپذیر بودن» سؤال میپرسی، نه فقط «توانایی». فقط نمیپرسی که آیا از لحاظ فیزیکی میتونن اون کار رو انجام بدن یا نه، بلکه داری میپرسی که آیا اونقدر مهربون هستن که انجامش بدن؟ این فعل تقریباً با هر فعل دیگهای عالی جواب میده.send کنه یا یه ایمیل رو check کنه، could همیشه ثابت میمونه. توی دنیای پرهرجومرج انگلیسی، اون یه دوستِ خیلی وفادار و پایداره.
الگوی ساخت
could خیلی راحته. اصلاً لازم نیست نگران صرفِ فعلهای پیچیده باشی. فقط این مراحل ساده رو دنبال کن:

you میاد باید فعل «لخت» باشه. یعنی to help نه، فقط help. فعلِ helping هم نه، فقط help. یه جورایی مثل سبک زندگی مینیمالیستی برای فعلهاست! اگه میخوای خیلی دیگه مؤدب باشی، میتونی please رو بعد از کلمهی you جا بدی. مثلاً: Could you please send me the Netflix password? (میشه لطفاً پسورد نتفلیکست رو برام بفرستی؟). اون please مثل خامه روی کیکه؛ باعث میشه نه گفتن بهت تقریباً غیرممکن بشه—مگر اینکه سه سال باشه بدون پرداخت هزینه از اکانت طرف استفاده کرده باشی!
کی استفاده کنیم
could استفاده کن. این انتخابِ استاندارد برای بیشترِ برخوردهای روزمرهست. اگه توی کافه هستی، نگو I want coffee (قهوه میخوام).Could I have a coffee, please? (میشه یه قهوه داشته باشم، لطفاً؟). (البته صبر کن، این درس دربارهی Could you هست، پس برگردیم سرِ اصل مطلب!). اگه لازم داری باریستا لپتاپش رو جابهجا کنه، بگو Could you move your laptop a bit? وقتی به یه دوست پیام میدی و یه لطفی ازش میخوای که بیشتر از ۵ دقیقه وقت میگیره، از این ساختار استفاده کن.Could you read my essay? خیلی بهتر از Can you read my essay? به نظر میرسه. توی محیطهای کاری هم مدام ازش استفاده کن. پیامهای اسلک (Slack)، ایمیل به استادها و درخواستهای لینکدین، همهشون عاشقِ could هستن.Could you tell me where the station is? اینجوری خیلی بیشتر احتمال داره که یه جواب درستوحسابی بگیری تا اینکه طرف فقط با سردی نگات کنه. کلاً اگه با خواهر و برادرت یا دوستِ صمیمیِ ۱۰ سالهت حرف نمیزنی، could امنترین انتخابته.
اشتباهات رایج
could از to استفاده کنی. هیچوقت نگو Could you to help me? این جمله برای انگلیسیزبونها مثل کشیدنِ ناخن روی تختهسیاه آزاردهنده است. یه اشتباه رایج دیگه، استفاده از شکل گذشتهی فعلِ اصلیه. مثلاً Could you helped me? غلطه. با اینکه خودِ could یه جورایی گذشتهست، ولی فعل اصلی باید توی شکل سادهی زمان حال بمونه. حواست به لحنت هم باشه. اگه با یه آهِ عمیق بگی Could you NOT? (میشه انجامش ندی؟!)، دیگه یه درخواستِ مؤدبانه نیست؛ بلکه کنایهست. کنایه زدن باحاله، ولی کمکی به قبول شدنت توی امتحان زبان نمیکنه! همچنین موقع نوشتن، علامت سؤال رو فراموش نکن. Could you send that. مثل یه دستور میمونه که لباسِ could پوشیده؛ این خواننده رو گیج میکنه. در آخر، وقتی درخواستت خیلی کوچیکه و با دوستهای خیلی صمیمی هستی، ازش استفاده نکن. اگه از بهترین دوستت بپرسی Could you please pass the remote? (میشه لطفاً کنترل رو بدی؟)، ممکنه ازت بپرسه حالت خوبه یا اینکه نکنه یه ربات جایگزینت شده!مقایسه با الگوهای مشابه
Can تهِ نردبونه؛ مستقیم و صمیمیه و با کسایی که خوب میشناسیشون استفاده میشه. Could یه پله بالاتره؛ دقیقاً همون نقطهی طلایی برای ادبِ عمومی.Would you mind...? رو داریم که از اونم رسمیتره. مثلاً Can you help? برای هماتاقیته. Could you help? برای همسایهته.Would you mind helping me? برای وقتیه که رئیسِت سرش شلوغ به نظر میرسه. ساختار May I هم هست، ولی اون معمولاً برای اجازه گرفتنه، نه درخواست کردن. اگه بگی May you help me? خیلی قدیمی به نظر میای، انگار از دلِ یه رمانِ قرن نوزدهمی اومدی!could استفاده کن. اون مثل داستانِ «گلدیلاکس» (Goldilocks) گرامره: نه خیلی صمیمی، نه خیلی رسمی، دقیقاً همونی که باید باشه. تصورش کن can مثل یه «بزن قدش» (high-five) و could مثل یه دست دادنِ محکم و دوستانهست.سؤالات رایج

بله، قطعاً! کمتر حالت دستوری داره و بیشتر شبیه یه سؤالِ واقعیه.

آیا could همیشه به معنیِ زمان گذشته است؟

فرقِ بین Could you و Would you چیه؟
خیلی شبیه هم هستن. Could بیشتر روی «امکانپذیر بودن» تمرکز داره، در حالی که Would روی «تمایل» طرف مقابل تمرکز میکنه. جفتشون خیلی مؤدبانه هستن.
