The -i Marker for Past Tense
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
To talk about the past in Finnish, add the letter 'i' to your verb stem.
- Add -i to the stem: puhua -> puhui (he/she spoke).
- If the stem ends in two vowels, the last one often drops: sanoa -> sanoi.
- If the stem ends in 'a' or 'ä', it disappears before the 'i': lukea -> luki.
