💡

The 'Guess' Trick

If you want to say 'I bet he didn't...', just use the Future Perfect Negative. It's the most natural way to express this in Bengali.
⚠️

No 'Ni' in the Future

Never use 'ni' with 'thakbo'. 'Ni' is strictly for past/present perfect. Always use 'na' for future contexts.
🎯

Time Markers

Use words like 'ততক্ষণে' (totkhone - by then) or 'ততদিনে' (totdine - by that day) to make your sentences sound more native.
💬

Polite Doubt

Using 'hoyto' (perhaps) with this rule makes your assumptions sound less aggressive and more polite.

Smart Tips

Use the Future Perfect Negative. It sounds much more native than using a literal translation of 'I bet'.

Ami baji dhorchi ora pouche ni. Ora hoyto pouche thakbe na.

Check if you should be using the Future Perfect instead of the Simple Future.

Ami 5tar moddhe korbo na. Ami 5tar moddhe kore thakbo na.

Ensure the auxiliary ends in '-en' (thakben).

Apni kore thakbe na. Apni kore thakben na.

Look for words like 'age' (before) or 'ekhono' (yet). 'Ekhono' usually implies a guess about the past.

She ekhono jabe na. She ekhono giye thakbe na.

تلفظ

kore (like 'ray' without the 'y')

The '-e' suffix

The '-e' in 'kore' or 'giye' should be short and crisp, not dragged out.

THAK-bo

Auxiliary Stress

The stress usually falls on the first syllable of 'thakbo' or 'thakbe'.

thakbo [pause] na

Negation Pause

There is a very slight, almost imperceptible pause before 'na'.

Falling Intonation

Ami kore thakbo na. ↓

A definitive statement about non-completion.

Rising Intonation (Guess)

She giye thakbe na? ↑

Expressing doubt or asking for confirmation of a guess.

Story

نکات فرهنگی

People in Kolkata often use this tense to be polite. Instead of saying 'You didn't see it,' they say 'You probably won't have seen it' to avoid being direct.

In Dhaka, the 'na' is sometimes pronounced very sharply. The use of 'thakbe na' for assumptions is extremely common in daily markets.

In older novels (like those by Rabindranath Tagore), you will exclusively see the 'Sadhu Bhasha' version of this rule.

The construction stems from the Sanskrit 'Sthā' (to stand/stay), which evolved into the Bengali auxiliary 'thaka'. The use of 'thaka' to indicate aspect (completion) developed in Middle Bengali.
