Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To say 'for someone' in Croatian, use the Dative case alone or the preposition 'za' followed by the Accusative case.

  • Use Dative alone for actions: 'Kupujem ti kavu' (I buy [for] you a coffee).
  • Use 'za' + Accusative for intended purpose: 'Ovo je za tebe' (This is for you).
  • Never use 'za' with the Dative case; it is a common but incorrect learner mistake.

Meanings

The beneficiary rule explains how to indicate who is receiving the benefit of an action or for whom an object is intended. In Croatian, this is split between the Dative case (indirect object) and the preposition 'za' (for) which requires the Accusative case.

1

Dative of Advantage (Beneficiary)

Used when an action is performed for someone's benefit without a preposition.

“Pomažem majci (I am helping [to] my mother)”

“Pišem ti pismo (I am writing [to] you a letter)”

2

Preposition 'za' + Accusative (Intended For)

Used to show that an object or a specific time/purpose is designated for someone.

“Ovaj dar je za nju (This gift is for her)”

“Rezervirao sam stol za dvoje (I reserved a table for two)”

3

Dative of Feeling/State

Expressing how something feels 'to' someone, often translated as 'for' in English.

“Hladno mi je (It is cold to me / I am cold)”

“Dosadno nam je (It is boring to us / We are bored)”

The 'Give' Test

If you can replace 'for' with 'to' in English and it still makes sense, use the Dative case in Croatian.
⚠️

No 'Za' with Dative

Never say 'za meni' or 'za prijatelju'. It's the most obvious sign of a beginner.
💡

Short Pronouns First

Always place short pronouns (mi, ti, mu) in the second position of the sentence. 'Ja TI dajem', not 'Ja dajem TI'.
💬

Politeness

Use the Dative 'Vam' (plural/formal) when speaking to strangers to show respect.

Smart Tips

Try removing 'za' and just using the short pronoun 'mi'.

On kuha za mene. On mi kuha.

Remember the '-i' ending for Dative: 'Daj Ani', 'Piši Mariji'.

Daj za Anu. Daj Ani.

Use 'Hvala ti za' + Accusative.

Hvala ti na pomoći. Hvala ti za pomoć.

Stop! Check if you need the Accusative '-u' or '-a' instead.

Ovo je za prijatelju. Ovo je za prijatelja.

Yes, but it sounds like you are buying *on behalf* of someone else (e.g., they are busy). If it's a gift, 'Kupujem ti' is better.

Feminine nouns change their endings based on the case. Dative uses '-i' and Accusative uses '-u'.

Use 'meni' (full form) for emphasis or at the beginning of a sentence. Use 'mi' (short form) for neutral, everyday speech.

Mostly, but it can also mean 'in' (time) like 'za pet minuta' (in five minutes).

'Hvala ti' is 'Thanks to you' (Dative). 'Hvala za sve' is 'Thanks for everything' (za + Accusative).

Use the Dative plural: 'Kupujem VAM piće' (I'm buying you all a drink).

Yes, the Dative beneficiary and 'za' + Accusative rules are identical in Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian.

Usually no. Use 'za' + Accusative for purpose, e.g., 'voda za kavu' (water for coffee).
