Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the verb 'biti' (to be) to describe your nationality or job, but remember that Croatian often drops the subject pronoun.

  • Use the long form of 'biti' at the start of a sentence or for emphasis: 'Ja sam student.'
  • Use the short (enclitic) form for normal statements: 'Student sam.'
  • In the negative, use 'nisam' (ne + sam): 'Nisam liječnik.'
