Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To make a sentence negative in Hungarian, simply place the particle 'nem' directly before the verb.

  • Place 'nem' before the verb: 'Nem eszem' (I do not eat).
  • For 'to be' (van/vannak), use 'nem' + 'vagyok/van': 'Nem vagyok éhes' (I am not hungry).
  • In questions, 'nem' still precedes the verb: 'Nem jössz?' (Are you not coming?).
