Reporting Verbs: Say, Tell, Ask
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use reporting verbs to relay information from others without using direct quotes.
- Use `ասել` (asel) for general statements followed by the conjunction `որ` (vor).
- Use `հարցնել` (hartsnel) for questions, usually followed by `թե` (te) or a question word.
- When 'telling' someone something, use `ասել` with the listener in the dative case.

Meanings
The use of verbs like 'say', 'tell', and 'ask' to communicate what someone else has expressed previously.
Reporting Statements
Relaying a fact or opinion using 'asel' (to say).

Smart Tips
Always check if you can put 'whether' in the English translation. If yes, use 'թե'.
Put the person right before the verb 'ասաց'.
Just use the same tense the person used. It's usually correct in Armenian!

No, `որ` is strictly for statements. For questions, use `թե` or the question word directly after `թե`.
`Ասել` is for short statements or reporting what someone said. `Պատմել` is for telling a story or a long sequence of events.
Yes, just like in English, you must change the pronouns to reflect who is speaking now. 'I am happy' becomes 'He said he is happy'.
In spoken Armenian, it is sometimes dropped if the question word is very clear, but for B1 level, you should always use it.
Use `ասել` + `որ` + the Subjunctive mood. For example: `Նա ասաց, որ գնաս` (He told you to go).
It's a cultural way to share news or rumors without taking personal responsibility for the truth of the statement.
