Using Subjunctive for Opinions
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the subjunctive to express opinions, suggestions, or possibilities instead of stating cold, hard facts.
- Drop the -ել/-ալ and add personal endings like -եմ or -ամ (e.g., գնամ).
- Use it after 'պետք է' (must) or 'կարող է' (might) for opinions.
- Negative forms always start with the 'չ-' prefix (e.g., չգնամ).
Meanings
The subjunctive mood in Armenian is used to express actions that are desired, possible, or necessary, rather than factual. It is the go-to form for giving advice or stating a subjective opinion.
Giving Advice
Suggesting what someone should do using phrases like 'it would be better'.
“Ավելի լավ է՝ նա գա:”
“Խորհուրդ եմ տալիս, որ կարդաս այս գիրքը:”
Expressing Possibility
Used with 'կարող է' to indicate something might happen.
“Կարող է անձրև գա:”
“Հնարավոր է՝ մենք ուշանանք:”

Learners often use the future (կգնամ) when they should use the subjunctive (գնամ).
Both can be used to tell someone what to do.
English uses 'to go' (infinitive) after 'want', but Armenian uses the subjunctive.

Smart Tips
Just use the 1st person subjunctive with a question mark. No need for extra words.
Always check if the verb ends in -el or -al to get that 3rd person ending right (-i vs -a).
Always follow 'Erani' (I wish) with the subjunctive to express a possible future wish.

Technically yes, but it sounds very formal or slightly 'off' in modern Eastern Armenian. Using the subjunctive `Ուզում եմ գնամ` is much more natural.
In Eastern Armenian, `պետք է` is standard. `պիտի` is more common in Western Armenian or in very specific emphatic contexts in Eastern Armenian.

Yes, verbs like `լինել` (to be) become `լինեմ, լինես, լինի...` and `գալ` (to come) becomes `գամ, գաս, գա...`. Most are quite regular in the subjunctive though!
