Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Lao allows you to stack verbs directly without conjunctions to describe a single complex action or sequence.
- Stack verbs sequentially: 'Go buy food' -> 'ໄປຊື້ອາຫານ' (pai sue a-han).
- Use verbs of motion/direction as modifiers: 'Bring it here' -> 'ເອົາ...ມາ' (ao...ma).
- No 'and' needed: Just place the verbs side-by-side in chronological order.
Meanings
Verb stringing is the practice of placing two or more verbs in a sequence to express a single event or a series of related actions without using connectors like 'and'.
Sequential Action
Actions happening in a specific order.
“ລາວໄປກິນເຂົ້າ (Lao pai kin khao) - He went to eat.”
“ຂ້ອຍມາຮຽນພາສາລາວ (Khoi ma hian phasa lao) - I came to study Lao.”
Instrumental/Manner
Using a verb to describe how an action is performed.
“ລາວເອົາປາກກາຂຽນ (Lao ao pakka khian) - He used a pen to write.”
“ຂ້ອຍຂີ່ລົດໄປ (Khoi khi rot pai) - I rode a vehicle to go.”
Resultative
The second verb indicates the result of the first.
“ລາວຕີໝາຕາຍ (Lao ti ma tai) - He hit the dog [and it] died.”
“ຂ້ອຍຊອກຫາບໍ່ເຫັນ (Khoi sok ha bo hen) - I searched [but] didn't see/find.”
