Audience adaptation is the art of shifting your pronouns, verb forms, and vocabulary to match the social status and intimacy of your listener.

Meanings
The process of modifying linguistic choices (pronouns, verb forms, lexicon, and intonation) based on the social context, the relationship between speakers, and the intended purpose of the communication.
Formal (Protocolar)
Used with high-ranking officials, in legal contexts, or very formal ceremonies.

Easily Confused
Both are formal, but 'dumneata' is singular and 'dumneavoastră' is plural. 'Dumneata' can also sound condescending if used incorrectly.
Both refer to multiple people, but 'voi' is only for friends.

Default to 'Dumneavoastră'. It is much easier to move from formal to informal than to apologize for being too casual.
Use 'Vă' with a capital 'V' (Vă, Dumneavoastră) to show extra respect, although this is becoming less common in modern business.
Use 'Nu vă supărați' before asking a stranger for something. It literally means 'Don't get upset' but functions as 'Excuse me'.
