Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Audience adaptation is the art of shifting your pronouns, verb forms, and vocabulary to match the social status and intimacy of your listener.

  • Use 'tu' for friends and 'dumneavoastră' for strangers or superiors. Example: 'Ce faci?' vs 'Ce faceți?'
  • Adjust your vocabulary: use 'salut' with peers but 'bună ziua' in professional settings.
  • Match the verb person: 'dumneavoastră' always takes the 2nd person plural verb form.
Context 👤 + Relationship 🤝 = Pronoun Choice (Tu/Dvs) + Verb Form

🎯

The 'Vă' Safety Net

When in doubt, always use the 'Vă' (plural) forms. No Romanian was ever offended by being treated with too much respect, but many are offended by too little.
⚠️

The 'Dumneata' Trap

Avoid 'dumneata' as a learner. It carries baggage of age and social class that is hard to navigate without native intuition.
💬

Sărut mâna

In many parts of Romania, it is still common to say 'Sărut mâna' to any woman older than you. It is not literal; it's just a high-respect greeting.
💡

Consistency Check

If you start a sentence with 'Vă rog' (formal), you cannot use 'ajută-mă' (informal). It must be 'ajutați-mă'.

Smart Tips

Default to 'Dumneavoastră'. It is much easier to move from formal to informal than to apologize for being too casual.

Ce faci? (to a 50-year-old stranger) Ce faceți? (to a 50-year-old stranger)

Use 'Vă' with a capital 'V' (Vă, Dumneavoastră) to show extra respect, although this is becoming less common in modern business.

vă scriu pentru... Vă scriu pentru...

Use 'Nu vă supărați' before asking a stranger for something. It literally means 'Don't get upset' but functions as 'Excuse me'.

Unde e toaleta? Nu vă supărați, unde este toaleta?

Wait for the other person to say 'Putem să ne tutuim?' or 'Zi-mi pe nume' (Call me by my name).

Continuing to use Dvs. after being told to use 'tu'. Switching to 'tu' immediately to show you've accepted the closer relationship.

تلفظ

Dum-nea-voas-tră (clear syllables)

Formal Intonation

Formal speech tends to have a more stable, slightly lower pitch with clear pauses between phrases.

Ce-ai făcut? (instead of Ce ai făcut?)

Informal Elision

In informal speech, 'tu' often blends with the next word.

Polite Request

Ați putea să mă ajutați? ↗

Rising intonation at the end shows deference and leaves room for a 'no'.

Memorize It

Mnemonic

Remember the 'V' rule: 'V' is for 'Voi' (plural) and 'Valoare' (value/respect). Use the 'V' verb form for anyone you value or don't know.

Visual Association

Imagine a staircase. 'Tu' is at the bottom with you on the same step. 'Dumneata' is one step up. 'Dumneavoastră' is at the top of the stairs. You must look up to speak to them.

Rhyme

Dacă vrei să fii politicos, / Folosește 'Vă' frumos!

Story

Imagine meeting a King. You wouldn't say 'Ce faci?'. You would use the biggest word you know: 'Dumneavoastră'. Then imagine meeting your dog. You wouldn't say 'Dumneavoastră'. You say 'Tu'. Everyone else fits in between.

نکات فرهنگی

The transition from 'dumneavoastră' to 'tu' is a significant social milestone. It usually happens when the older or higher-status person suggests: 'Hai să ne tutuim' (Let's use 'tu').

In rural areas of Moldova, 'dumneata' is used much more frequently and is seen as a sign of deep, traditional respect rather than being patronizing.

Younger generations in cities like Bucharest are using 'tu' much earlier in professional settings, influenced by English-speaking corporate culture, though 'dumneavoastră' remains the standard for first meetings.

The word 'dumneavoastră' comes from the phrase 'Domnia Voastră' (Your Lordship/Your Reign), a calque of the Byzantine Greek 'Hē Basileia Sou'.

It's not inherently rude, but it can be patronizing. It's like calling someone 'young man' or 'buddy' when they are an adult. Stick to `dumneavoastră` to be safe.

Usually when they suggest it, or if you are the same age and have worked together for a few weeks. In startups, it's almost immediate; in government offices, it might never happen.

Usually, no. If you are talking to one man, you say `Dumneavoastră sunteți amabil` (singular). Only the verb is plural.

Literally 'I kiss your hand'. It's a traditional sign of respect for women and elders. You don't actually kiss the hand in modern urban settings.

Use `Dumneavoastră` and plural verbs. You can also use `Stimați invitați` (Esteemed guests) or `Doamnelor și domnilor` (Ladies and gentlemen).

Only if they explicitly ask you to. Even then, some Romanians prefer to keep the `dumneavoastră` to maintain professional boundaries.

It's very informal. With friends, it's fine. With a stranger or a superior, it is considered very rude and uneducated.

`Vă rog` is formal or plural; `Te rog` is informal and singular. Both mean 'please'.
