Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Serbian, short auxiliary verbs (clitics) must always sit in the second position of the sentence.

  • Clitics like 'sam', 'si', 'je' cannot start a sentence.
  • They must follow the first stressed word or phrase.
  • If you use a pronoun, the clitic follows it immediately.

Find the Host

Always look for the first word in your sentence. That is where your clitic must attach.
⚠️

No Starting Clitics

If you find yourself starting a sentence with 'sam', stop and move it after the first word.
🎯

Subject Omission

You don't need 'Ja' every time. Just start with the verb if the subject is clear.
💬

Natural Flow

Native speakers love to drop pronouns. It makes your Serbian sound much more authentic.

Smart Tips

Place the subject at the end of the sentence.

Ja sam radio. Radio sam ja.

The clitic still follows the first word.

Moj najbolji prijatelj je došao. Moj je najbolji prijatelj došao.

The clitic follows the question word immediately.

Gde ti si bio? Gde si bio?

Attach the 'ni' to the clitic.

Ja ne sam radio. Ja nisam radio.
