弄明白

You usually put the object after the phrase. For example: 弄明白 + [the thing you don't get]. You can also use it with 把 to show you've tackled a specific problem. If you are still struggling, just add 没 (méi) in front. It’s very flexible and works for logic, instructions, or even people's mysterious behavior.

Use this when you are studying a tricky grammar point. Use it at work when a project brief makes zero sense. It’s perfect for those moments when you need to tell your boss, "I'll figure it out." It also works great when you're trying to navigate a new city's subway system. Basically, if there is confusion, 弄明白 is the solution.

Don't use this for simple physical sight. If you can't see a sign because it's blurry, use 看清楚 instead. 弄明白 is about the brain, not the eyes. Also, avoid using it for deep emotional 'understanding' of a person's soul. For that, 了解 is a much better fit. Don't use it if you already know the answer instantly; it implies a process of figuring it out.

In Chinese culture, there is a strong emphasis on 'clarity' and 'logic' in learning. The word 明白 literally means 'bright white.' It suggests that when you understand something, the darkness of confusion is replaced by light. Using 弄 shows a proactive, 'can-do' attitude toward solving problems. It’s a very practical, down-to-earth expression used by everyone from students to CEOs.

You might hear 搞明白 (gǎo míngbai) which is slightly more informal. In Northern China, people love using 搞. Another one is 想明白, which means you've thought something through and reached a conclusion. If you want to say you *can't* figure it out no matter how hard you try, use 弄不明白. It's a bit more frustrating than just saying you don't know.
