A lot of / Lots of: Exprimer de grandes quantités

Tu as deux super mots :
a lot of
et
lots of
pour parler de grosses quantités de n'importe quoi, hyper facilement !

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'a lot of' or 'lots of' to talk about large quantities of both countable and uncountable things easily.

  • Use with plural nouns: 'I have a lot of books.'
  • Use with uncountable nouns: 'I drink a lot of water.'
  • Keep the 'of' before the noun: 'Lots of people' (not 'Lots people').

Overview

How This Grammar Works

Vois a lot of et lots of comme des synonymes. Ils veulent dire la même chose, mais lots of semble juste un tout petit peu plus détendu et décontracté. La chose la plus importante à retenir est qu'ils ont toujours besoin du mot of si tu mets un nom après eux.
Tu ne peux pas juste dire 'I have a lot apples' — on dirait que tu as oublié comment parler ! Ça doit être a lot of apples.
Un autre truc cool ? Le verbe dans ta phrase change selon le nom qui suit. Si tu dis A lot of people are..., tu utilises are parce que les gens sont comptables.
Si tu dis A lot of water is..., tu utilises is parce que l'eau est indénombrable.

2
Commence par ton sujet (comme I, There, ou My cat).
3
Ajoute ton verbe (comme have, is, ou are).
4
Mets a lot of ou lots of.
5
Finis avec le nom (la chose dont tu as une grande quantité).
6
Si tu utilises un nom comptable pluriel :
7
There are + a lot of + friends + at the party.
8
Si tu utilises un nom indénombrable :
9
I have + lots of + homework + to do.
10
Remarque que a lot of, c'est trois mots. N'essaie pas de les écraser ensemble en 'alot'. 'Alot' n'est pas un mot, même si ton correcteur automatique le laisse parfois passer. C'est une erreur courante que même les locuteurs natifs font, mais maintenant tu es meilleur qu'eux ! Aussi, rappelle-toi que lots of, c'est deux mots. C'est soit a lot of ('a' singulier) ou lots of ('s' pluriel), mais jamais 'a lots of'. Ce serait comme porter deux chapeaux en même temps — juste trop de choses à gérer.

When To Use It

Tu entendras ces expressions partout. Utilise-les quand tu veux souligner que quelque chose est grand en quantité.
  • Social Media: 'That post got a lot of likes.'
  • Food/Dining: 'I ate lots of pizza last night, and now I regret everything.'
  • Work/Study: 'I have a lot of emails to answer before I can play video games.'
  • Travel: 'There were lots of tourists at the Eiffel Tower, so I couldn't get a good selfie.'
Ils sont parfaits pour les phrases positives. Alors que many et much sont souvent utilisés dans les questions ('Do you have much time?') ou les phrases négatives ('I don't have many friends'), a lot of adore les ondes positives. Tu peux aussi l'utiliser dans les négations et les questions, mais il brille le plus quand tu déclares que tu as une montagne de quelque chose.
C'est le chauffeur de salle des déterminants anglais. Si tu streames un jeu et que tu dis 'We have lots of viewers today!', ça sonne beaucoup plus naturel et excitant que de dire 'We have many viewers'.

Common Mistakes

Même si cette règle est sympa, les gens trébuchent encore dessus. Voici les zones de danger :
  • The 'Alot' Monster: Écrire alot au lieu de a lot. Imagine une petite créature appelée un 'Alot' et rappelle-toi que tu ne parles pas de lui. Tu parles d'une grande quantité : a + espace + lot.
  • The 'Of' Eraser: Oublier le of. Tu ne peux pas dire 'He has a lot money'. Tu as besoin de ce of pour connecter la quantité au nom. C'est la colle qui tient la phrase ensemble.
  • The 'A Lots' Hybrid: Mélanger les deux formes. 'I have a lots of books', c'est non. Choisis-en un : a lot of ou lots of.
  • Verb Confusion: Utiliser is quand tu devrais utiliser are. 'A lot of students is here' sonne bizarre et faux. Comme les étudiants sont comptables et pluriels, utilise are.
  • Using it as an adverb incorrectly: Si tu veux dire que tu aimes beaucoup quelque chose, dis 'I like it a lot'. N'ajoute pas le of à la fin s'il n'y a pas de nom qui suit. 'I like it a lot of' fera pencher la tête aux gens de confusion, comme un chien qui entend un sifflet à ultrasons.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Comment se comparent-ils à many et much ? Vois ça comme un choix de style.
  • Many est pour les choses comptables (chats, voitures, étoiles). Ça sonne un peu formel dans les phrases positives. 'I have many cars' donne l'impression que tu es un milliardaire du 19ème siècle. 'I have a lot of cars' donne l'impression que tu es un YouTubeur moderne.
  • Much est pour les choses indénombrables (eau, amour, bagages). On l'utilise surtout dans les questions et les négations. 'Do you have much luggage?' ça va. 'I have much luggage' donne l'impression que tu écris un poème. Utilise plutôt a lot of pour ce sentiment normal de tous les jours.
  • Plenty of est un autre cousin. Ça veut dire "plus qu'assez". Utilise-le quand tu es content de la quantité. 'We have plenty of time' veut dire ne stresse pas ! A lot of veut juste dire que la quantité est grande, que tu en sois content ou non.

Quick FAQ

Q

Is lots of more than a lot of?

Nan ! Ils signifient exactement la même quantité. Lots of sonne juste un peu plus chill.

Q

Can I use a lot of with singular nouns?

Seulement si le nom est indénombrable, comme a lot of cheese. Tu ne peux pas dire a lot of car. Tu dirais a lot of cars.

Q

Why do native speakers say alot if it's wrong?

Parce qu'on est paresseux ! Mais dans tes examens ou e-mails formels, utilise toujours l'espace. Ça montre que tu connais ton sujet.

Q

Can I say 'thanks a lot of'?

Non ! S'il n'y a pas de nom après, dis juste 'thanks a lot'. Le of est seulement pour quand tu précises de *quoi* tu as beaucoup.

Q

Is it okay for job interviews?

Oui, a lot of est parfaitement professionnel. Lots of pourrait être un peu trop décontracté si le patron est très sérieux, alors reste sur a lot of pour être sûr. Ça montre que tu as a lot of respect ! Tu as vu ce que j'ai fait là ?

FAQ (8)

It is neutral to informal. It is perfectly fine for most writing, but in very formal academic essays, you might use `a large number of` or `a great deal of` instead.

Yes! You can say 'Do you have a lot of time?'. It is very common in spoken English.

There is no difference in meaning. `Lots of` is just slightly more informal and common in speaking.

When 'a lot' is an adverb meaning 'very much' or 'often', it doesn't need 'of'. For example: 'I run a lot.'

No. `Alot` is always a spelling error. It must be two words: `a lot`.

It depends on the noun after `of`. Use a plural verb for plural nouns (`A lot of people are...`) and a singular verb for uncountable nouns (`A lot of water is...`).

Yes, you can. 'I don't have a lot of money' is very common, though 'I don't have much money' is also correct.

Similar, but `plenty of` means 'enough and more'. `A lot of` just means 'a large amount'.
