Voix Passive avec les Modaux : Ça peut être fait

Discutez sans effort des possibilities, des necessities et des obligations en combinant les modaux avec la voix passive.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'Modal + be + Past Participle' to focus on what happens to an object when using words like can, must, or should.

  • Always use 'be' in its base form after the modal: 'It can be fixed' (not 'is fixed').
  • The main verb must be a past participle: 'The work should be done' (not 'do' or 'did').
  • For negatives, put 'not' between the modal and 'be': 'It cannot be opened'.
📦 Object + 🛠️ Modal + 🐝 be + ✅ Past Participle

Overview

Dans une phrase normale, on dit I can fix the phone. Mais à la voix passive, le téléphone prend le devant de la scène : The phone can be fixed.
On utilise cela quand on veut parler de règles, de possibilités ou de conseils sans se concentrer sur une personne précise. C'est super courant dans les légendes sur les réseaux sociaux, les manuels d'instructions ou même quand tu commandes à manger sur une appli.

How This Grammar Works

Imagine que ta phrase est un plateau de tournage. Habituellement, le sujet est la star. Avec la voix passive, on renvoie l'acteur principal et on déplace le décor (l'objet) à l'avant.
Le verbe modal (comme can, should ou must) reste au milieu pour nous donner l'ambiance de l'action. Est-ce une possibilité ? Utilise can.
Une obligation ? Utilise must. Une bonne idée ?
Utilise should. L'ingrédient secret est le mot be, suivi du participe passé (la troisième forme du verbe).

Formation Pattern

1
Créer ces phrases est plus facile que de choisir quoi regarder sur Netflix. Suis ces trois étapes :
2
Commence par l'Object (la chose qui subit l'action).
3
Ajoute ton Modal Verb suivi immédiatement du mot be.
4
Termine par le Past Participle (forme V3).
5
Structure : Object + Modal + be + Past Participle

When To Use It

Tu trouveras ce modèle partout :
  • Possibility & Ability (can) : Photos can be taken here.
  • Obligation & Rules (must) : The bill must be paid.
  • Advice & Suggestions (should) : The vegetables should be washed.

Common Mistakes

  • Oublier le be : Ne dis pas It can done. Dis It can be done.
  • Utiliser la mauvaise forme verbale : Ne dis pas should be send. Dis should be sent.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

  • Voix Active : You can use this filter (focus sur toi).
  • Passive avec Modal : This filter can be used (focus sur le filtre).

Quick FAQ

💡

Pense « Celui qui fait » vs « Celui qui reçoit »

Si le sujet de ta phrase ne fait pas l'action, elle est probablement passive ! L'objet devient le centre d'attention. Par exemple, au lieu de
Someone cleans the room
, dis
The room can be cleaned.
⚠️

N'oublie pas 'be' !

C'est l'erreur la plus fréquente. Rappelle-toi toujours : modal + be + participe passé. Sans 'be', pas de magie passive ! Par exemple,
The door should be opened
, pas
The door should opened
.
🎯

Adoucir les ordres

Utilise la voix passive avec les modaux pour rendre des demandes ou des instructions moins directes et plus polies, surtout au travail. C'est un outil subtil et efficace. Par exemple,
The form must be completed by Friday
est plus doux que
You must complete the form by Friday.
🌍

Formel vs. Informel

Même si elle est utilisée partout, la voix passive avec les modaux (surtout 'will be' et 'must be') est plus courante dans l'anglais formel comme les journaux ou les annonces officielles. La voix active est souvent préférée dans les conversations décontractées. Par exemple,
The news will be announced
vs
They will announce the news
.
💡

Pour les vérités générales

Cette structure est géniale pour des affirmations générales, sans avoir besoin de désigner une personne. Par exemple :
Mistakes can be learned from.

Smart Tips

Use 'should be' or 'could be' to make requests. It sounds less like a command.

You must fix this error. This error should be fixed as soon as possible.

Check if there is a modal before it. If so, you are looking at a modal passive!

The work is done. The work can be done.

Always use the 'third form' from your verb list (e.g., go-went-GONE).

It must be went. It must be gone.

Use 'must be' + V3. It is the standard way to express non-negotiable requirements.

You have to wear a seatbelt. Seatbelts must be worn.

Prononciation

It can be /kənbi/ done.

The 'be' reduction

In natural speech, the word 'be' is often unstressed and sounds like a quick /bi/ or even /bə/.

It can't be /kæntbi/ fixed.

Modal + not contraction

Contractions like 'can't' or 'won't' are much more common than 'cannot' or 'will not' in spoken English.

Emphasis on the Modal

It MUST be done!

Conveys strong urgency or insistence.

Emphasis on the Participle

It can be FIXED.

Conveys that the action is possible, even if difficult.

Story

A detective arrives at a crime scene. He doesn't know who did it, so he says: 'The door must be opened, the fingerprints must be taken, and the truth will be found.' He focuses on the actions because the 'who' is a mystery.

Word Web

can bemust beshould bemight bewill becould bemay be

Défi

Look around your room. Find 3 things and say what 'must be done' to them (e.g., 'The bed must be made', 'The window should be cleaned').

Notes culturelles

British speakers use 'mustn't be' more frequently than Americans, who often prefer 'shouldn't be' or 'can't be' for prohibitions.

The modal passive is used to avoid 'blame culture'. Instead of saying 'You didn't finish the report,' a manager says 'The report should have been finished,' focusing on the task.

Legal documents use 'shall be' to indicate a binding obligation, which is rarely used in everyday speech.

The passive voice in English evolved from Old English using 'weorthan' (to become) and 'beon' (to be). Modals were originally independent verbs that gradually became auxiliaries.

FAQ (8)

Yes, in informal English you can say 'It might get done,' but 'be' is much more common and safer for B1 learners.

English doesn't allow two modals together. You can't say 'It might can be done.' Use 'It might be possible to do it' instead.

No, in fact, we usually omit it if the person doing the action is obvious or not important.

Move the modal to the front: 'Can it be fixed?' or 'Should the meeting be moved?'

Because modal verbs are always followed by the base form of the next verb. The base form of 'is/am/are' is `be`.

Most can (can, could, must, should, may, might, will, would). 'Shall' is rare but possible in legal texts.

Technically, 'have to' is a semi-modal, but it follows the same passive pattern: 'have to + be + V3'.

Avoid it in very casual conversation with friends, as it can sound too formal or 'robotic'.

puede ser + participio / se puede + infinitivo

English always requires the auxiliary 'be', whereas Spanish often uses the reflexive 'se'.

French high

French participles must agree in gender and number with the subject, unlike English.

German moderate

kann ... werden + Partizip II

The auxiliary 'werden' and the modal create a 'verb bracket' where the participle goes to the very end of the sentence.

Japanese low

〜れる / 〜られる (passive suffix) + modal

Japanese doesn't use a separate 'be' verb; the passive is built into the main verb's conjugation.

Arabic low

Passive verb form + modal (yumkin/yajib)

There is no equivalent to the English 'be' auxiliary in Arabic passive constructions.

Chinese partial

可以被 (kěyǐ bèi) + verb

Chinese verbs do not change form (no past participle), so the 'V3' concept is entirely new to Chinese learners.
