§ रिसाव (risāva) vs. टपकना (ṭapaknā)
One of the most frequent mistakes learners make is confusing रिसाव (risāva) with टपकना (ṭapaknā). While both relate to liquid escaping, they aren't always interchangeable. रिसाव refers to a more general leakage, often implying a gradual or continuous escape of a substance, not just liquid. It can be a gas leak, an oil leak, or even information leaking. टपकना, on the other hand, specifically means 'to drip' or 'to leak drop by drop', and is almost exclusively used for liquids.
गैस पाइप में रिसाव है। (There is a leakage in the gas pipe.)
नल से पानी टपक रहा है। (Water is dripping from the tap.)
§ Using रिसाव as a verb
Another common error is trying to use रिसाव directly as a verb. Since रिसाव is a noun, you need an auxiliary verb to express the action of leaking. The most common verb used with रिसाव is होना (honā), meaning 'to happen' or 'to occur', or करना (karnā) meaning 'to do', but होना is more natural for an unintentional leak.
- Incorrect:
- टैंक पानी रिसाव रहा है। (Tank water is leaking.)
- Correct:
- टैंक से पानी का रिसाव हो रहा है। (There is a leakage of water from the tank.)
छत में रिसाव हो गया है। (A leakage has occurred in the roof.)
§ Overusing रिसाव for minor drips
Sometimes learners use रिसाव for very small, insignificant drips. While technically not wrong, it can sound a bit formal or exaggerated for a simple drip from a tap. For such situations, टपकना is much more natural and common.
- For a significant, ongoing leak of any substance: Use रिसाव.
- For small, intermittent drips of liquid: Use टपकना.
वहाँ से तेल का रिसाव हो रहा था। (Oil was leaking from there.)
बूंद-बूंद करके पानी टपक रहा था। (Water was dripping drop by drop.)
Understanding these distinctions will help you use रिसाव more accurately and naturally in your Hindi conversations.

This sentence structure (Subject + Object + Verb) is common in Hindi. 'पाइप में रिसाव' (leakage in the pipe) acts as the subject, and 'एक बड़ी समस्या है' (is a big problem) is the predicate.
Here, 'तेल का रिसाव' (oil leakage) is the subject. The phrase 'पर्यावरण के लिए' (for the environment) precedes the adjective 'हानिकारक' (harmful) and the verb 'है' (is).
This sentence uses the present continuous tense. 'इस टंकी में' (in this tank) sets the location, 'पानी का रिसाव' (water leakage) is the action, and 'हो रहा है' (is happening) indicates the ongoing nature.
