- Use 'da' followed by the present tense of a perfective verb: 'Idem u grad da kupim kruh.'
- The subject can be the same or different in both clauses without changing the structure.
- For negative purpose ('so that... not'), use 'da ne' + present tense: 'Trčim da ne zakasnim.'

Smart Tips
Stop! Don't use the infinitive. Use 'da' + the present tense of the person doing the action.
Always use 'da ne' together. It's the standard way to say 'so that... not'.
Don't panic. The structure 'da + present' stays exactly the same even if a new person enters the sentence.
Swap 'da' for 'kako bi' and use the conditional (bih, bi, bismo...).

Notes culturelles
Croatians value directness in daily speech. Using 'da' instead of 'kako bi' makes you sound like a local rather than a textbook.
In some coastal dialects, you might hear 'da' replaced by 'za' + infinitive in very informal settings, though this is non-standard.
In professional emails, 'kako bi' is strictly preferred to show respect and professionalism.
The conjunction 'da' is common to all Slavic languages, originating from Proto-Slavic *da.

FAQ (8)
Sometimes, but it's risky. After verbs of motion (like 'go'), you can sometimes use the infinitive, but `da + present` is always correct and sounds more natural in modern Croatian.
It's mostly about formality. `Da` is for everyday speech; `kako bi` is for formal writing and speeches.
Because the 'purpose' is seen as a goal that was 'present' in the mind of the speaker at the time of the action. `Došao sam da vidim` = I came with the goal: 'I see'.
No, `da` is a very busy word! it also means 'yes', 'that' (I think that...), and is used in commands (Da si odmah došao!). Context is key.
Yes, but it's less common. Use them if the purpose is a continuous action (e.g., `Učim da bih znao` - I study so that I [continuously] know).
Use `da nitko ne` + present tense. Example: `Šapćemo da nas nitko ne čuje` (We whisper so that no one hears us).
In some dialects (like in parts of Dalmatia), people might use the infinitive more often or different particles, but `da` is understood and used everywhere.
Try to explain every action you do today. 'Otvaram prozor da uđe zrak.' 'Kuham kavu da se probudim.'
