A1 Idiom Neutre

Biti poročen

To be married

Signification

Having a legal spouse.

🌍

Contexte culturel

Civil marriage is the only legally binding form. Many people have a religious ceremony later, but they aren't 'poročeni' legally until they visit the administrative unit. The 'šranga' custom is still alive. The groom must prove he can saw wood or perform tasks to 'earn' his bride from the village. Cohabitation (koruzništvo) is extremely common and socially equal to marriage in most everyday contexts. Marriage is often seen as a family affair. Even if you are 'poročen', your parents might still have a big say in your life, especially in smaller towns.

💡

Dual is key

If you are married, you will most often say 'Sva poročena' (We two are married). Using the plural 'Smo poročeni' sounds like you are in a polyamorous group!

⚠️

Gender matters

Always check your ending. A man saying 'Sem poročena' will get some funny looks.

Instrumental Case

Practice the 'z/s' + Instrumental. It's the most common grammar mistake with this phrase.

💬

The 'Ring' Question

Slovenians often wear wedding rings on the right hand, though the left is becoming more common. Don't assume someone isn't 'poročen' just by looking at their left hand.
