Meaning of 紧凑

The word 紧凑 (jǐncòu) generally describes something that is compact, tightly arranged, or well-organized. Think of it like things fitting together without much wasted space.

Describing Objects

You can use 紧凑 to describe physical objects. For example, a compact car (紧凑型汽车 - jǐncòu xíng qìchē) or a tightly packed suitcase (紧凑的行李箱 - jǐncòu de xínglǐxiāng).

Describing Schedules/Plans

紧凑 is also very common when talking about schedules or plans. A tight schedule (紧凑的日程 - jǐncòu de rìchéng) means you don't have much free time. A well-organized plan (紧凑的计划 - jǐncòu de jìhuà) is efficient.

Describing Structure/Composition

You can use it for the structure of something, like a book or a piece of writing. A compact story (紧凑的故事 - jǐncòu de gùshi) means it's well-structured and doesn't wander.

Common Usage: 紧凑的

Often, you'll see it followed by 的 (de) when it acts as an adjective, e.g., 紧凑的房间 (jǐncòu de fángjiān - a compact room).

Example: 时间紧凑

A very common phrase is 时间紧凑 (shíjiān jǐncòu), which means 'time is tight' or 'the schedule is packed'. Example: 我们时间很紧凑,快点走吧。(Wǒmen shíjiān hěn jǐncòu, kuài diǎn zǒu ba. - Our time is very tight, let's hurry up.)

Example: 结构紧凑

When describing writing or a building, you might hear 结构紧凑 (jiégòu jǐncòu), meaning 'compact structure' or 'well-organized structure'. Example: 这篇文章结构很紧凑。(Zhè piān wénzhāng jiégòu hěn jǐncòu. - This article has a very compact structure.)

Distinction: Small vs. Compact

While something compact might be small, 紧凑 emphasizes the efficient use of space or the tight arrangement, not just the size. A big room can still have a compact layout.

Don't confuse with 'tight' in other senses

Don't use 紧凑 for 'tight' as in tight pants (紧身的裤子 - jǐnshēn de kùzi) or a tight grip (抓得很紧 - zhuā de hěn jǐn). 紧凑 specifically refers to compactness or arrangement.

Practice with daily objects

Look around you. Can you describe your desk as 紧凑? Is your apartment 紧凑? Practice using it for things you see every day to solidify its meaning.
