How to See (and Stop) Deforestation from Space | Tasso Azevedo | TED

(Chainsaw buzzing)

00:15

(Tree crashing)

00:20

20, 40, 60, 80, 100.

00:26

In every second on the last 12 months,

00:28

almost 20 trees were cut down in the Amazon.

00:32

See, deforestation and degradation is a kind of a disaster

00:35

for the only country in the world that is named after a tree.

00:39

Brazil is the fifth-largest greenhouse gas emitter on the planet,

00:42

but different from the top four,

00:44

the bulk of our emissions do not come from burning fossil fuels.

00:48

It actually comes from the way we use the land.

00:52

That's 75 percent of our emissions.

00:55

The majority of that results from forests being cut down.

01:00

You see, tropical forests are like the lungs of the Earth.

01:03

You heard something like that before, right?

01:05

When we cut them down,

01:06

they essentially exhalate the carbon that has been stored

01:09

for over many decades,

01:11

and they no longer exist to absorb the carbon

01:15

and to maintain the evapotranspiration

01:17

that keeps the cooling system of the planet.

01:20

In 2024, the countries with the largest areas of tropical forests,

01:25

like Brazil, Peru, Congo, Indonesia,

01:28

lost an area of forest the size of Rwanda.

01:32

And this forest has been converted to pasture, croplands,

01:36

urban areas, mining

01:39

and also suffering degradation from logging,

01:42

increased droughts and wildfires.

01:46

So we need to fight this degradation,

01:50

and in order to do so,

01:54

we have to understand what's happening on the ground.

01:59

So digital mapping can be a key role on that.

02:03

Because maps, maps have power,

02:07

but only if you can understand really what's going on on the ground.

02:12

So global satellite technology allows us to see the world
