B1 conjunction #300 सबसे आम

~けれど

~ keredo

When used as a conjunction, けれど (keredo) links two clauses. The first clause presents some information, and the second clause adds a contrasting or unexpected piece of information.

For example, you might say, 「日本に行ったけれど、富士山は見ませんでした。」 (Nihon ni itta keredo, Fujisan wa mimasen deshita.) This means, "I went to Japan, but I didn't see Mt. Fuji."

It's similar in usage to 「が」 (ga) or 「でも」 (demo), but けれど can sometimes feel a little softer or more conversational. It can also be used to introduce a request or a question gently, where the first clause provides background for the second.
