움직이다
When you want to talk about something changing its spot, the word you'll use is 움직이다. Think of a chair being pushed across the floor; that chair is 움직이다. If you're walking, you are also 움직이다.
It's a really useful verb for describing any kind of movement, whether it's an object, an animal, or a person. You'll hear and use this word a lot in everyday Korean conversations.
§ Basic Sentence Structure with 움직이다
The verb 움직이다 (to move) is used similarly to how 'to move' is used in English. It generally follows the subject-object-verb order, or just subject-verb if there's no direct object being moved. The key is understanding what is doing the moving.
- Subject + 움직이다
- When the subject itself is performing the action of moving.
아이가 움직여요. (The child moves.)
차가 움직이고 있어요. (The car is moving.)
§ Moving an Object: Using the Object Marker -을/를
If you are moving an object, you will attach the object particle -을 (after a consonant) or -를 (after a vowel) to the object being moved.
저는 책상을 움직였어요. (I moved the desk.)
의자를 움직이지 마세요. (Please don't move the chair.)
§ Expressing Direction: Using -으로/로
When you want to specify a direction in which something is moving, you can use the particle -으로 (after a consonant, especially 'ㄹ') or -로 (after a vowel or 'ㄹ' if the consonant before 'ㄹ' is not 'ㄹ'). This particle means 'to' or 'towards' a direction.
- 동쪽으로
- To the east
- 앞으로
- Forward
- 뒤로
- Backward
차는 앞으로 움직였어요. (The car moved forward.)
방향을 바꾸어 오른쪽으로 움직여주세요. (Please change direction and move to the right.)
§ Expressing a Location of Movement: Using -에서
If you want to say *where* something is moving, you can use the particle -에서. This particle indicates the location where an action takes place.
공장에서 기계가 움직여요. (The machine moves in the factory.)
물 속에서 물고기가 움직이고 있어요. (Fish are moving in the water.)
§ Combining Particles for More Complex Sentences
You can combine these particles to create more detailed sentences about movement. For instance, you can state where an object is being moved to.
그는 짐을 창고로 움직였습니다. (He moved the luggage to the storage room.)
