In Laos, 'good weather' is synonymous with the cool season (November-February). If you say 'Akard dee' when it's 40 degrees and sunny, people will think you are crazy or being very sarcastic. Because the languages are so similar, Thais and Lao people use this phrase identically as a social lubricant. It's the safest topic to avoid politics or personal questions. Hmong communities in the mountains of Northern Laos experience much colder 'Akard dee' than those in the Mekong valley. For them, 'good' might mean 'sunny' because it provides warmth. Expats often use 'Akard dee' to describe the 'Beer Lao weather'—the late afternoon when the sun goes down and it's pleasant to sit by the river.
